Job summary

Abbott Laboratories in Plano, TX seeks a Staff Systems Engineer to lead systems engineering for complex active implantable medical-device platforms within Neuromodulation. Translate clinical and business needs into robust, verifiable system requirements across hardware, firmware, software, and human factors.

This hands-on, non-supervisory role guides cross-functional design reviews, risk management, and verification activities, mentors peers, and helps shape technology roadmaps and engineering

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related engineering field.
• 8+ years of R&D or product development experience in systems engineering.
• Experience defining architectures, requirements, interfaces, and verification strategies.
• Experience in regulated medical-device development and applying risk management.

Responsibilities

• Lead system architecture, design, and requirements strategy for neuromodulation products.
• Translate patient and clinician needs into measurable system requirements and acceptance criteria.
• Guide system design across hardware, firmware, software, and mechanical interfaces.
• Define performance budgets, operating ranges, and failure modes to reduce risk.
• Collaborate with firmware and software teams on control and data-analysis algorithms.
• Lead design reviews, investigations, and root-cause analyses; drive verification activities.
