Job summary

Brex is seeking a Staff Engineer to lead Travel & Expense initiatives. Based in Seattle, this hybrid role blends in-office collaboration with remote work flexibility, requiring three days on-site weekly while offering up to four weeks of remote work per year.

The position focuses on identifying cross-team problems, setting technical direction, and mentoring engineers across multiple teams to raise the bar in backend systems and operational excellence.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with leadership across multiple teams or a group.
• Identify and drive ambiguous, cross-cutting problems to resolution without a defined charter.
• Deep experience designing and operating large-scale backend systems in production.
• Strong collaboration skills; raise the bar for engineers and work with ICs and managers.
• Excellent written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

• Identify the highest-impact technical problems across Travel & Expense and drive them to resolution.
• Set and raise the technical bar across the group through design reviews and architecture decisions.
• Partner as a peer with Staff Engineers and EMs across expenses, travel, policy, and spend controls.
• Act as a force multiplier: mentor senior engineers and improve how teams design and ship.
• Bring an AI-forward mindset to how the org builds, reviews, and operates.
• Contribute directly to the group's technical strategy and inform leadership investments.
