Job summary

Turo is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Payments team in San Francisco. You will help migrate from a monolith to a scalable microservices architecture, owning Billing, Invoicing and Payments components for a growing marketplace.

You’ll collaborate with product engineering and platform teams to deliver high-scale, reliable systems and drive architectural decisions while mentoring others in a dynamic, hybrid office environment.

Qualifications

• 8–10+ years of experience shipping high-scale code to production.
• Fluent in at least one language such as Java, Kotlin, Python, Go or C.
• Solid CS fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, databases, distributed systems, search.
• Strong communicator able to explain complex concepts to designers and engineers.
• Enjoy solving problems and helping others meet their goals.
• Experience with logging, monitoring and alerting systems.
• Interest in search, streaming, databases or other backend tech.
• BS/MS or equivalent in CS or related field (bonus).
• Experience building and scaling Payments & Billing systems.
• Passion for FinTech in a growing startup.

Job description

The Payments team works with core services and other product engineering teams across the Turo eco-system to build-out new product capabilities and to enhance the scalability, performance & reliability of the services that power the Turo car rental marketplace. As Staff Software Engineer on the Payments team, you'll work with a team of talented software engineers to design & build both new capabilities as well as migrating existing payment & billing related services, embedded in a monolith, to a new microservices architecture designed for scale on the cloud.

What you will do:

• Collaborate with product engineering, core services and platform teams to develop Turo into a set of distributed scalable microservices.
• Drive the decomposition of our legacy monolith to extract the payment and billing functions into independently deployable services.
• Along with your teammates, you'll own and evolve critical building blocks such as Billing, Invoicing and Payments for Turo's growing marketplace.
• Generate maintainable, high-quality code, conduct thorough testing, engage in collaborative code reviews, and oversee the code deployment process.
• Identify opportunities for enhancing our architecture & application design of Turo.
• Create tools & utilities for diagnosing & resolving issues within Turo's eco-system.
• Ensure proper technical design and documentation.
• Operate effectively in a dynamic and expanding environment, adapting to constant change, where fluid processes and creative solutions are valued.
• Apply your skills to elevate the technical standards and provide guidance on architectural decisions.

Your profile:

• 8-10+ years experience shipping high-scale code to production.
• Fluent in at least one language - e.g., Java, Kotlin, Python, Go, or C
• Possess strong computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, database concepts, distributed systems, and search
• Strong communicator. Explaining complex technical concepts to designers, support, and other engineers is no problem for you
• Enjoy solving problems and helping others meet their goals
• Experience with logging, monitoring and alerting systems and tools
• Keen interest in search, streaming, database or other backend technologies
• Bonus if you have: Bachelor's/Master's degree or equivalent in Computer Science or related field
• Experience in building & scaling Payments & Billing systems
• Passion for developing FinTech solutions for a growing start-up!

For this role, the target base salary range in San Francisco is $182,000-$228,000 annually. This role is also eligible for equity and benefits. In general, our ranges reflect the market-based target for new hire salaries based on the level and location of the role. Within the range, individual pay is determined by objective factors assessed during the application and interview process, such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. This role will be in-office on a hybrid schedule - Turists will be expected to work in the office 3 days per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
