The opportunity...
A well-funded, fast-growing company building self-driving technology is expanding its mapping engineering group. Maps underpin how the vehicle knows where it is, where the road goes and where it is allowed to drive, so this work sits close to the core of the product.
You'll write production code daily, take real ownership of a significant piece of the mapping stack, and watch your work get exercised on road-going vehicles.
What the work looks like
Depending on your experience, you could be placed in one of these areas:
- Road network modelling: Create and evolve the lane-level representation of the road that the driving software relies on. You'll collaborate with the planning engineers and deal with road geometry, intersections and the connectivity between lanes, helping the network extend to new regions and new vehicle types.
- Standard-definition map data and routing: Take charge of commercial and open map datasets, and blend them with high-detail maps. You'll build tooling that works out efficient routes for collecting new map data, and handle problems such as snapping GPS traces to roads and splitting data into tiles.
- Mapping platform and pipelines: Design the services and automation that build, refresh and distribute maps dependably as geographic coverage and data volume increase.
- Excellent software engineering skills, with real production experience in C++ and/or Python (C++ favoured) across substantial code bases
- Depth in 3D or spatial geometry. A self-driving background is not necessary; people from GIS, robotics, surveying, photogrammetry, graphics or navigation are encouraged to apply
- Hands-on experience processing large volumes of real-world, imperfect data
- A history of personally writing and delivering production software
- Seniority at Senior or Staff level
Helpful
- Familiarity with high-definition maps, lane-level road data or interchange formats like OpenDRIVE
- Knowledge of coordinate systems and projections, map matching and road-network datasets
- Background in pathfinding, routing or graph-based algorithms
- Experience generating road structure from sensor data
- Exposure to motion planning or other downstream consumers of map data
- Rust
