Job summary

Stripe is seeking a senior staff engineer for the Issuing team in the United States to own end-to-end technical strategy for critical systems and APIs. You will lead cross-functional efforts across backend services, authorization, and card program management, driving scalability, reliability, and platform health.

You will mentor senior engineers, influence architectural roadmaps, and collaborate with product, design, and other teams to deliver high-impact issuing capabilities at scale.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of industry software engineering experience.
• Proven track record designing and shipping large-scale distributed backend systems.
• Experience leading cross-functional engineering projects end-to-end.
• Strong API design instincts for developer-friendly interfaces.
• Excellent written and verbal communication across engineers, product, and leadership.
• High ownership mindset—able to define problems and plans beyond a fixed spec.
• Clear, precise communication on complex technical topics for diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

• Define and drive the technical strategy for Issuing, including multi-year architecture decisions across backend services, APIs, and user-facing surfaces.
• Own end-to-end technical solutions for critical systems, authorization flows, spending controls, and cardholder management.
• Identify and lead infrastructure investments that unlock new issuing models and geographic expansion.
• Collaborate with product managers, design, and cross-functional partners to drive initiatives from design through launch.
• Make principled build-vs-reuse decisions and produce clear technical roadmaps balancing near-term delivery with long-term health.
• Advise engineering and product leadership on technical trade-offs and downstream business implications.
• Mentor and grow senior engineers and contribute to engineering hiring and culture.
