The Role

Our team is building a suite of financial management tools that empower businesses to run more efficiently and profitably. We aim to become the trusted financial partner for our sellers, helping them streamline operations, make smarter decisions, and grow their businesses with confidence. This team has a mix of senior and junior engineers and owns a variety of experiences that empower sellers with insights to grow their business, manage their pricing rules and discounts.

We’re looking for a Staff/Principal Frontend Engineer (L7) to serve as the technical authority for our team while remaining deeply hands-on. You’ll drive cross-org architectural initiatives, set technical direction, implement key features, and mentor engineering talent across teams. This role blends strategic leadership with hands-on execution to shape the systems and experiences that power millions of seller interactions.

This is an opportunity to lead a critical product surface area in Square’s next evolution: helping sellers manage not just transactions, but their entire financial lives. You’ll shape the foundation of tools that sellers use daily to understand their performance and make strategic decisions. As our Tech Lead, your technical leadership will define how fast we move, how well we collaborate, and how impactful we can be.

You Will
  • Lead major engineering efforts: Design and implement complex, user-facing features and frontend architectures that scale.
  • Define technical direction: Drive architectural decisions, system design, and best practices across Financial Suite and related orgs.
  • Partner cross-functionally: Collaborate closely with product, design, backend, and mobile teams to shape impactful product experiences.
  • Champion platform modernization: Lead the migration away from legacy frameworks like Ember and advocate for scalable technologies like React and Next.js.
  • Prioritize reliability and velocity: Uphold high standards for performance, accessibility, testing, monitoring, and operational excellence.
  • Mentor and grow engineers: Delegate complex projects, coach others, and foster a culture of inclusion, technical excellence, and ownership.
  • Lead org-wide initiatives: Influence strategy for seller acquisition, activation, and financial decision-making.
  • Contribute to Square’s broader frontend community: Share learnings, drive tooling improvements, and shape the future of our web platform.
You Have
  • A proven track record of leading large-scale (spanning ~1+ year) frontend projects, especially those involving reusable component systems and multiple contributors.
  • Experience as a Tech Lead, defining technical vision, scoping complex work, and unblocking teams.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, particularly in cross-functional and cross-team settings.
  • A focus on frontend system health—you’ve driven incident response, implemented testing frameworks, and upheld high standards for performance and accessibility.
  • A passion for mentorship and building inclusive, high-velocity teams.
Even Better
  • Experience modernizing frontend stacks or leading org-level migrations.
  • Familiarity with component systems like Storybook.
  • Deep knowledge of A/B testing, experimentation platforms (e.g. Optimizely, LaunchDarkly), and growth/activation funnels.
  • Strong understanding of accessibility standards and real-world implementation.
  • Background in commerce, financial services, or B2B SaaS products.
