Job description

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without any hidden fees or compounding interest.

We are looking for a highly motivated Staff Software Engineer to build scalable foundational systems and data pipelines to power our financial reporting.

You will partner closely with our Product and Accounting teams to design robust reporting and reconciliation systems, which enable us to operate and forecast with the highest degree of integrity and precision. These systems are responsible for delivering accurate and timely data from Affirm’s suite of financial products, for consumption by our Accounting, Treasury, and Strategic Finance teams.

You will take an active role in collaborating on the roadmap, designing technical solutions, driving and involving in cross-team initiatives. You will partner closely with the Engineering Manager and the team to improve the quality standards and processes in the team and represent the team in cross-team initiatives.

What You'll Do:

1. Set technical strategy for your team on a year-long time scale, and help your team tie it together with critical, business-impacting projects.
2. Collaborate across teams in the product development lifecycle by working with product management, design, and analytics to ensure technical sustainability, risks, and trade-offs are well understood and managed.
3. Act as a force-multiplier for your team through your definition and advocacy of technical solutions and operational processes.
4. Take ownership of your team’s operations and availability by ensuring proper monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting are in place to support "keep the lights on" and on-call efforts.
5. Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting code review and design standards, and advocating for them through writing and tech talks.
6. Help develop talent on your team by providing feedback, guidance, and leading by example.
7. Participate in an on-call rotation as a role requirement.

What We Look For:

• 8+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin.
• Extensive experience with highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes.
• Knowledge of Airflow, Data Lake (e.g., Apache Iceberg), and Data Warehouse (e.g., Snowflake) solutions is a plus.
• Proven ability to deliver major features, system components, or deprecate functionality through a clear technical and execution plan.
• Strong coding skills that promote understanding and reuse by others.
• Comfortable working across a range of technical levels, from low-level language idioms to large system architecture.
• Demonstrated growth and impact through feedback and iteration with engineering and cross-functional peers.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with a global engineering team.

Compensation & Benefits:

Base Pay Grade: P

Equity Grade: 6

Compensation includes a transparent pay structure based on location, experience, and skills, plus benefits such as health coverage, stipends, and equity rewards.

ESP base pay range per year: €101,000 - €131,000.
