Job description

PayPal has been revolutionizing commerce globally for more than 25 years. Creating innovative experiences that make moving money, selling, and shopping simple, personalized, and secure, PayPal empowers consumers and businesses in approximately 200 markets to join and thrive in the global economy.

We operate a global, two-sided network at scale that connects hundreds of millions of merchants and consumers. We help merchants and consumers connect, transact, and complete payments, whether they are online or in person. PayPal is more than a connection to third-party payment networks. We provide proprietary payment solutions accepted by merchants that enable the completion of payments on our platform on behalf of our customers.

We offer our customers the flexibility to use their accounts to purchase and receive payments for goods and services, as well as the ability to transfer and withdraw funds. We enable consumers to exchange funds more safely with merchants using a variety of funding sources, which may include a bank account, a PayPal or Venmo account balance, PayPal and Venmo branded credit products, a credit card, a debit card, certain cryptocurrencies, or other stored value products such as gift cards, and eligible credit card rewards. Our PayPal, Venmo, and Xoom products also make it safer and simpler for friends and family to transfer funds to each other. We offer merchants an end-to-end payments solution that provides authorization and settlement capabilities, as well as instant access to funds and payouts. We also help merchants connect with their customers, process exchanges and returns, and manage risk. We enable consumers to engage in cross-border shopping and merchants to extend their global reach while reducing the complexity and friction involved in enabling cross-border trade.

Our beliefs are the foundation for how we conduct business every day. We live each day guided by our core values of Inclusion, Innovation, Collaboration, and Wellness. Together, our values ensure that we work together as one global team with our customers at the center of everything we do – and they push us to ensure we take care of ourselves, each other, and our communities.

Job Summary:

Join PayPal’s Consumer Product Catalog and Search team and help build the next generation of product discovery for millions of global shoppers. We own the backend and data infrastructure that powers search, recommendations, and catalog knowledge at global scale.

Job Summary:

Join PayPal’s Consumer Product Catalog and Search team and help build the next generation of product discovery for millions of global shoppers. We own the backend and data infrastructure that powers search, recommendations, and catalog knowledge at global scale.

As a Staff Data Engineer, you’ll play a central role in designing and building scalable data pipelines and knowledge layers that enrich our product catalog. You’ll work closely with applied ML engineers and search engineers to transform raw merchant data into structured, contextualized, and high-quality product knowledge that fuels intelligent discovery experiences.

Job Description:

We’re looking for experienced data engineers who are passionate about building robust data platforms, enjoy solving complex modeling and pipeline challenges, and are eager to drive impact through high-quality data and metadata systems. You'll tackle problems such as attribute extraction, entity resolution, taxonomy mapping, schema evolution, and knowledge graph construction — all in service of powering AI-driven search and personalized recommendations.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and implement scalable batch and real-time data pipelines to process and enrich large volumes of product catalog data.

  • Develop robust data transformations and workflows for entity resolution, attribute extraction, normalization, and deduplication.

  • Design and maintain metadata layers and knowledge representations (e.g., product graphs, ontologies, embeddings) that serve as foundational infrastructure for ML and AI-driven features.

  • Collaborate with taxonomy and content experts to structure and evolve product classification systems and schemas.

  • Monitor and improve data quality, consistency, and lineage; define and enforce data contracts and validation rules. Optimize pipeline performance and reliability, ensuring efficient operation at scale.

  • Drive best practices in data engineering, including testing, versioning, documentation, and observability.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science , Data Engineering, or a related technical field.

  • 5+ years of experience designing and building large-scale data processing systems, preferably in cloud-native environments.

  • Strong experience with batch and streaming data technologies such as Apache Beam, Dataflow, or Pub/Sub.

  • Proficiency in Python, Scala or Java; familiarity with SQL and data transformation tools (e.g., dbt , BigQuery ) is a plus.

  • Solid understanding of data modeling, schema design, and data lifecycle management.

  • Experience with structured and semi-structured data (JSON, Avro, Protobuf , etc.) and modern data warehousing.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a collaborative mindset, with the ability to work across engineering, ML, and product domains.

Preferred Qualification:

Nice to Have

  • Experience in e-commerce, product catalogs, or knowledge graph construction.

  • Familiarity with machine learning pipelines or collaborating with ML teams.
