We’re looking for a Staff-level Software Engineer to help shape the future of Copilot chat at GitHub.com. As a key member of the Copilot Chat team, you’ll collaborate with a diverse, dynamic, and distributed group of engineers, product managers, and designers to revolutionize how developers interact with AI-powered tools. Your expertise will directly influence and enhance Copilot’s capabilities across the GitHub platform, driving innovation and transforming the way millions of developers work daily.

Responsibilities
  • Understand technical constraints, develop, communicate, and track realistic plans to ship products, features, and bug fixes.
  • Coordinate with engineering and product leadership to define and prioritize projects that meet business objectives.
  • Ensure the team builds high-quality, architecturally consistent software to reliably meet customer needs.
  • Support a highly available service used by millions daily. Cultivate an environment of empowerment, ownership, and belonging.
  • Promote learning, growth, and career advancement for team members.
  • Mentor, pair, and delegate work to foster professional and technical development.
  • Write, review, and maintain code primarily in Ruby/Rails, Go, and JavaScript/TypeScript.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 9+ years of experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline, with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python.
  • Alternatively, an Associate’s Degree with 8+ years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor’s Degree with 7+ years, or a Master’s Degree with 5+ years, or a Doctorate with 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • 3+ years of experience leading technical decision-making and architecture for highly available distributed systems.
  • Experience working with large language models (LLMs).
  • Experience with on-call rotations, incident response, and site reliability, including diagnosing and resolving complex production issues under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for async collaboration, documentation, and visibility of work.
  • Passionate about fostering effective engineering practices and processes.
  • Proficiency in Git, GitHub, and branching strategies.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools and best practices.
  • Strong customer focus and data-driven approach.
  • Understanding of production system monitoring and observability.
Compensation Range

The base salary range for this role is USD $127,600 - $338,500 per year. Compensation depends on location, experience, skills, and role impact. Additional benefits include bonuses, stock, and potential sales incentives.
