Job summary

Aurora is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Vehicle Connectivity team to define architecture and build a reliable, scalable communications framework for vehicle-to-cloud connectivity. You will work with autonomy engineers to ensure performance, support field tests, and mentor engineers across time zones.

The role emphasizes hybrid work with in-office presence and collaboration across a talented, diverse team, driving safety and efficiency in self-driving transport.

Qualifications

  • BS/MS/PhD in CS or related field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Expert-level C++ programming skills and the ability to design high-performance, thread-safe, memory-efficient systems in Linux.
  • Ability to work across multiple programming languages and paradigms.
  • Experience with networking protocols (TCP, UDP, gRPC, HTTP) and network health monitoring frameworks.
  • Passion for writing robust, intuitive production code.
  • Experience with Linux network configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to navigate large codebases and collaborate across time zones.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • GoLang experience and safety-critical systems exposure are desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Define vehicle connectivity and communication architecture.

  • Address connectivity concerns for vehicle runtime: networking, performance, observability.
  • Collaborate with autonomy engineers to meet data throughput requirements.

  • Mentor senior engineers, set coding standards, and shape long-term vehicle-to-cloud connectivity roadmap.

We’re searching for a Staff Software Engineer to join Aurora’s Vehicle Connectivity team. This team is responsible for Aurora’s self‑driving vehicle connectivity stack for reliable, observable, and secure vehicle‑to‑cloud communications.

In this role, you will
  • Define vehicle connectivity and communication architecture
  • Design and implement highly-reliable, low-latency vehicle communications framework handling diverse mobile network conditions
  • Address connectivity‑specific concerns for vehicle runtime, e.g. networking, performance, and observability
  • Work with autonomy engineers to meet performance and efficiency requirements for data throughput
  • Provide engineering support for field testing and fleet operations
  • Mentor senior engineers, set coding standards, and drive the long‑term roadmap for vehicle to cloud connectivity
Required Qualifications

  • Work autonomously, but still be a great team player with colleagues across time‑zones
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience with performance evaluation and optimization
  • Strong programming skills in GoLang
  • Experience with safety critical systems

For roles based in Mountain View, CA: The salary range for this position is $180,000 - $303,000 per year.

For roles based in Pittsburgh, PA: The salary range for this position is $171,000 - $273,000 per year.

Aurora's pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, the successful candidate's starting base pay will be determined based on factors including job‑related skills, experience, qualifications, relevant education or training, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future. The successful candidate will also be eligible for an annual bonus, equity compensation, and benefits.
