Job summary

GRAIL is seeking a Staff-level full-stack engineer based in the Bay Area with flexibility for a hybrid schedule. This role will contribute to patient-facing software for the Galleri Test, my.grail.com, and provider.grail.com, using Go, AWS, Kubernetes, microservices, and React.

You will work on a broad set of systems, drive large cross-functional programs, mentor peers, and help shape engineering standards and tooling.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in CS, EE, bioinformatics, or related field.
  • 8–12+ years designing, developing, testing, and maintaining full-stack apps and microservices.
  • Strong knowledge of Go, Java, Python, JavaScript, React, Spring, REST APIs, and cloud platforms.

Grail is looking for a Staff level full-stack engineer who enjoys working on a broad array of software systems and projects. The team is responsible for patient-facing software used for The Galleri® Test as well as gathering clinical data. We strive to build a robust and scalable infrastructure as well as easy-to-use UI interfaces. Our technical stack consists of Go, AWS, Kubernetes, Microservices, and React.

This role is based in Menlo Park, California, and will move to Sunnyvale, California in Fall 2026. It offers a flexible work arrangement, with the ability to work from GRAIL's office or from home. Our current flexible work arrangement policy requires that a minimum of 60%, or 24 hours, of your total work week be on-site. Your specific schedule, determined in collaboration with your manager, will align with team and business needs and could exceed the 60% requirement for the site. At our Menlo Park campus, Tuesdays and Thursdays are the key days where we encourage on-site presence to engage in events and on-site activities. We may also consider candidates in Durham NC but the bay area is preferred.

Responsibilities
  • Use your experience developing backend applications and distributed systems to build native cloud-based software that is leveraged by GRAIL’s key commercial offerings for the Galleri® Test , my.grail.com and provider.grail.com
  • Develop and lead multiple large cross-functional / cross-organizational programs with high complexity, resource requirements and associated risks.
  • Drive improvements for the software engineering organization based on understanding of business needs and industry trends
  • Provide technical leadership in the form of standards, tools, and knowledge requirements for the software engineering organization
  • Guide and mentors team members to provide an example of innovation and excellence
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Bioinformatics, or similar technical field or equivalent experience.
  • 8-12+ years of meaningful work experience designing, developing, testing, and maintaining full-stack applications and microservice ecosystems.
  • Excellent knowledge of:
  • Programming Languages: Go (preferred), Java, Python, JavaScript, C++
  • Frontend: React, Angular
  • Backend: Spring, Spring Boot, REST APIs, gRPC (preferred)
  • Cloud & DevOps: AWS (preferred), GCP, Azure, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform (preferred), Microservices
  • Data: PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis
  • Development Practices: CI/CD, Automated Testing, Agile Development
  • Experience developing distributed systems on one of the cloud platforms like AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Experience with writing and executing test protocols
  • Passion for designing and building practical high-quality software solutions.
  • Strong professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with gRPC, terraform, AWS is a plus

The expected, full-time, annual base pay scale for this position is $169k-224k in the bay area.

This role may be eligible for other forms of compensation, including an annual bonus and/or incentives, subject to the terms of the applicable plans and Company discretion. This range reflects a good-faith estimate of the range that the Company reasonably expects to pay for the position upon hire; the actual compensation offered may vary depending on factors such as the candidate’s qualifications.
