Job summary

Edison Scientific is hiring a Member of Technical Staff (Full-stack, Backend-Focused, Python) to build our AI-powered discovery platform. You’ll design backend services, APIs, and data pipelines while contributing to user-facing features and tight integration with frontend teams.

The role emphasizes reliability, production ownership, and collaboration across engineers, designers, and researchers. The position is on-site at the San Francisco Dogpatch office, within the Product Engineering team,

Qualifications

• Typically, 4+ years of software engineering experience, with exposure to both backend and frontend development.
• Strong proficiency in at least one backend language (e.g., Python, Node.js), with an emphasis on Python for this role (interview requires Python).
• Experience designing and consuming APIs (FastAPI, REST; GraphQL a plus).
• Familiarity with frontend frameworks (React, Next.js) and modern web development practices.
• Working knowledge of relational or document databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB).
• Exposure to cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerized environments (Docker; Kubernetes a plus).
• Experience with version control, CI/CD pipelines, and basic automated testing.
• Strong curiosity, growth mindset, and eagerness to learn in a fast-moving environment.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain backend services, APIs, and databases powering the platform.
• Contribute to frontend features and workflows in collaboration with design and frontend teams.
• Build and extend data pipelines supporting AI agents and research workflows.
• Implement monitoring, observability, and automated testing for reliability and uptime.
• Troubleshoot issues across the stack and proactively improve system quality.
• Collaborate with engineering, design, and research teams to ship new AI-driven features.
• Grow as a software engineer within a collaborative team at the frontier of AI for science.
