Job summary

Coinbase is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Customer Administration Engineering (CAE) Team. You will anchor architecture, mentor engineers, and drive Control Center's evolution into a modular, AI-agent-ready operations platform.

You'll own MCP tool registries, AI orchestration, HITL workflows, and secure backend services serving thousands of internal users and AI agents. Collaborate with EAA, Product, and Security to deliver scalable platform primitives.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with a track record architecting and delivering large-scale distributed systems, including backend service design, API development (gRPC, MCP, GraphQL), and scalable microservices architectures.
• Proven ability to lead ambiguous, high-impact technical initiatives from whiteboard to production with high-quality, well-tested code.
• Hands-on experience with cloud-native infrastructure including AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, event-driven architectures (Kafka, MQ), distributed caching, and SQL/NoSQL databases.
• Track record building secure internal tools or platforms with strong security controls, access management, audit logging, and data governance in regulated environments.
• Experience building or integrating with agentic AI systems including MCP servers, LLM orchestration, RAG pipelines, HITL workflows, or guardrail frameworks; proficient in Go and comfortable with Python.
• Utilizes generative AI responsibly with human oversight to improve workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Responsibilities

• Own the architecture and delivery of foundational platform capabilities including MCP tool registries, AI orchestration layers, risk-based access automation, and the away-team contribution model enabling product groups to build on Control Center safely and quickly.
• Drive Control Center's evolution into an AI-agent-ready, headless operations platform by designing MCP procedures, guardrails, HITL orchestration, and evaluation frameworks for secure autonomous operations.
• Lead technical direction across the team with Engineering Manager and Product, authoring TDDs, conducting design reviews, breaking down initiatives into milestones, and mentoring engineers through code reviews.
• Build highly reliable, secure distributed backend services with clear SLOs, observability, incident response, and operational readiness for Tier-1 systems serving thousands of internal users and AI agents.
• Partner across EAA, Product Engineering, and Security Engineering to deliver cross-functional outcomes and drive shared platform primitives, eliminating duplicated infrastructure.
