Job summary

Twilio is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for the Data Substrate team. You will architect scalable data solutions, mentor engineers, and drive cross-functional initiatives for high-impact results.

Based remotely in the United States, you’ll lead with expertise in data systems, Kafka, Clickhouse, Spark, and cloud platforms like AWS, using Kubernetes and Terraform/Helm to deploy robust pipelines.

Qualifications

About the job

We are seeking an experienced Staff Engineer to join our Data Substrate team. In this role, you will be responsible for architecting scalable and reliable data solutions, collaborating closely with cross-functional partners driving technical innovation, and mentoring a team of talented engineers. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in data systems, strong leadership skills, and a proven track record of delivering complex data projects at scale.


Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll:

Required:



  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • 8+ years of software development experience, with a focus on data infrastructure.

  • Proven track record of architecting and delivering complex, large-scale data projects.

  • Strong expertise in big data components such as Kafka, Clickhouse, Spark and other distributed computing systems.

  • Strong expertise with orchestrating, scaling, and managing containerized applications in production environments using Kubernetes (K8s) and Terraform/Helm.

  • Experience designing, building, and operating large-scale data platforms on cloud computing systems like AWS.

  • Proficiency in Python, Java, Bash, and Go with strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence technical roadmaps and drive alignment across cross-functional teams.

  • Proven leadership experience in mentoring and developing engineers.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and deliver high-impact results.


Desired


  • Knowledge of tying into various authorization/authentication systems.

  • Networking and network security knowledge.

  • Deep expertise in Clickhouse: demonstrated experience in architecting, tuning, and operating Clickhouse at scale.


Location

This role will be remote, and based in the United States. This role will be remote but is not eligible to be hired in San Francisco, CA, Oakland, CA, San Jose, CA, or the surrounding areas.


Travel

We prioritize connection and opportunities to build relationships with our customers and each other. For this role, you may be required to travel occasionally to participate in project or team in-person meetings.
