Job summary

Qualifications

  • BS or MS in CS or related field with 10+–12+ years experience.
  • Hands-on AI-Driven Development Life Cycle (ADLC).
  • Proficient in AI coding agents (Claude, Cursor) and spec-driven development.
  • Designing and deploying enterprise-grade agentic applications.
  • Experience with foundational LLM and SLM models for autonomous multi-agent systems.
  • Expertise in Context Engineering and building RAG/MCP architectures.
  • Experience in memory management, routing, tool integration and observability.
  • Strong backend skills: Java, Spring, Hibernate.
  • Experience with messaging, event streaming and data caching.
  • Knowledge of OpenSearch, PostgreSQL, ClickHouse.
  • Excellent communication; familiarity with Angular/React.
  • VMware knowledge a plus; US work authorization.

About the Role

VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) is an infrastructure platform to run modern workloads, from mission-critical workflows to containerized apps in the private cloud. VCF integrates compute, storage, networking, security, and cloud management services to provide a consistent, and simplified customer experience.

The operations and management engineering team in VCF Business Unit (BU) is an exciting and fast-paced organization that is leading the charge of simplification of operations and management across enterprise private cloud environments.

We have ambitious goals to expand management capabilities to support the latest application architectures and deployment systems such as Kubernetes, as well as enable simplified and unified management and operations of these systems to free customers to focus on the business decisions they need to make to optimize their operational cost.

In our team, software engineers are focused on delivering innovative management functions to boost proactive monitoring, insights, diagnostics, and observability to enable customer self-diagnostics for their operational continuity. You will be leveraging new technologies, solving complex problems, and working with several VCF teams for designing and delivering management features.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will become part of a talented team of engineers, working together to build a better product – solving complex problems, and delivering best quality software.

You will be responsible for architecture, design, implementation, and providing technical expertise for delivering operations and management features.

You will be working in an agile and fast-paced environment with freedom to explore, innovate and challenge the status quo.

You will be expected to: Learn and apply new technologies for delivering high-quality operations and management product features. Actively participate in all phases of software development including requirements, architecture/design, coding, unit testing, debugging, design and code reviews.

Requirements
  • BS degree in Computer Science or related field and 12+ years of experience or MS degree in Computer Science or related field and 10+ years of related experience.
  • Hands‑on experience in an AI‑Driven Development Life Cycle (ADLC).
  • Proficient in leveraging AI coding agents (e.g., Claude, Cursor) and applying spec‑driven development methodologies to accelerate engineering workflows.
  • Proven track record of designing and deploying enterprise‑grade agentic applications.
  • Experience working with both foundational LLM and SLM models to build autonomous, multi‑agent architectures.
  • Expertise in Context Engineering and building RAG and MCP architectures to optimize retrieval accuracy, context management, and model grounding.
  • Experience in harness engineering including designing model routing, agent execution loop, tool integration, safety guardrails, authZ, and execution environments and memory management to ensure reliability, observability, and deterministic performance in non‑deterministic systems.
  • Passion for keeping pace with rapid AI advancements, continuously evaluating and integrating state‑of‑the‑art models, tools, and design patterns into production systems.
  • Strong proficiency in backend languages and frameworks, including Java, Spring, Hibernate.
  • Proven Experience in building end to end features and products with high quality, availability, performance and scale.
  • Solid understanding of message queueing, event streaming and data caching.
  • Experience working with Database technologies (RDBMS and NoSQL), preferably OpenSearch and PostgreSQL, ClickHouse.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with modern JavaScript‑based web frameworks like Angular or React.
  • Knowledge of VMware technology is a plus.
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US.

Compensation and Benefits

The annual base salary range for this position is USD 143,800.00 to USD 230,000.00. As a valued member of our team, you’ll be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus and the opportunity to receive not only a competitive new hire equity grant, but also annual equity awards, connecting your success directly to the company’s growth. All subject to relevant plan documents and award agreements.
