Job summary

IonQ, Inc. is seeking a Staff Scientist, Materials Science to join the Computational Sciences team in a newly formed group focused on condensed matter and high energy physics problems.

You will integrate classical simulation with fault-tolerant quantum approaches, guiding project work and collaborating across teams to tackle complex scientific challenges. The role sits at the interface of traditional simulation and fault-tolerant quantum computing, with a path toward contributing to IonQ's

Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or a related field with postdoctoral or industry experience.
  • Deep expertise in condensed matter or high energy physics and related areas.
  • Experience with classical simulation methods and HPC workloads for these problems.
  • Familiarity with fault-tolerant quantum algorithms and their applications.
  • Scientific programming in Python and C++ to integrate tools and manage code in version control.
  • Hands-on use of QuantumATK, QuantumEspresso or VASP is valuable.

Responsibilities

  • Lead condensed matter and high energy physics application projects, working independently against goals.
  • Connect physics problems to quantum computation by selecting fault-tolerant algorithms and mapping to quantum formulations.
  • Combine classical simulation and HPC workloads with quantum methods in end-to-end workflows.
  • Compare computed results against experimental data such as neutron scattering observables.
  • Collaborate with fault-tolerant algorithms researchers and other teams; contribute to publications.
