Northside Hospital - Registered Professional Nurse (RN) Role

The Registered Professional Nurse at Northside Hospital independently plans and provides professional nursing care to patients in accordance with physician orders, established guidelines, and the scope of practice as defined by the Georgia Nurse Practice Act. According to the American Nurses Association's (ANA) Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 3rd Edition (2015), nursing involves the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through diagnosis and treatment of human responses, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations.

The scope of practice for registered nurses depends on their education, experience, role, and the population served. At Northside Hospital, the practice incorporates ANA's Scope and Standards, along with two additional clinical practice components, categorized into five domains:

  1. Clinical Knowledge and Practice: Assessment, Diagnosis, Outcomes Identification, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation; Clinical Information Systems (Documentation); Patient Care Technology.
  2. Professional Practice: Communication, Culturally Congruent Practice, Ethics, Practice Evaluation, Resource Utilization.
  3. Leadership: Collaboration, Community Involvement, Environmental Health, Leadership.
  4. Professional Development: Education of Self and Others, Knowledge Expansion, Practice Advancement, Contribution to the Profession.
  5. Evidence-Based Practice, Quality, and Research: Evidence-based Practice, Nursing Research, Quality of Practice, Patient Satisfaction, External Reporting/Benchmarks.

The Staff RN III position requires the nurse to be licensed in Georgia, in good standing, with a minimum of two years of full-time nursing experience, and holding a BSN, ADN, or Nursing Diploma. The RN III manages patient care for an assigned group of patients, adhering to the nursing division's philosophy and policies, including the Northside Nursing Collaborative Care Model. All professional nurses at Northside embody values of collaboration, communication, coordination, integration, and empowerment.

This role is part of a career progression from novice to expert, with each level (RN I to RN VI) building upon the knowledge, skills, and competencies of the previous levels.

Knowledge, Skills, and Certifications Required
  1. Graduate of an accredited nursing school.
  2. Licensed as a Registered Nurse in Georgia, in good standing, with no limitations.
  3. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) by the American Heart Association.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
  2. At least two years of experience as an RN.
  3. Additional certifications such as ACLS, PALS, NRP, or other clinical specialty certifications relevant to specific units.
  4. Visual color acuity, depending on the role and unit requirements.
