Responsibilities

Schedule: Part‑time weekday nights (2 shifts/week, 6:30 pm–7:00 am); no weekends or call. Holiday rotation 2 per year—24 hrs.

Overview

Coordinates professional nursing and individualized, family‑centered care to patients/families through the use of the nursing process and clinical skills in accordance with standards and hospital policies and procedures.

Essential Functions

• Conduct individualized age‑specific patient/family assessments according to defined unit scope and nursing practice standards, collaborative problems, nursing diagnoses, or protocols.
  • Collect and document data related to patient’s individualized care.
  • Demonstrate age‑specific competency in assessment by obtaining and interpreting information in terms of patient needs, growth and development, and treatment requirements.
  • Assess patient/family need for education and use an individualized approach in delivery style.
  • Assess family expectations for, and involvement in, the assessment and continuous care of the patient.
  • Identify nursing diagnoses, collaborative problems, and/or protocols for each patient at the time of admission.
• Shift Assessment/Reassessment:
  • Perform reassessment based on unit standards, collaborative practice guidelines, and changes in patient condition.
  • Communicate changes to appropriate persons (MD, Charge RN, family) as indicated.
  • Schedule cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology procedures, obtain permits, and teach patient/family about procedures and related complications.
  • Collect and document data related to patient’s response to procedures and changes in condition.
  • Apply critical thinking during procedures and analyze patient response to medications and treatments.
  • Use appropriate telephone etiquette.
• Develop an individualized patient/family plan of care using collaborative practice guidelines and protocols.
• Utilize assessment data to individualize goals and actions for the patient, including collaboration with the family and the healthcare team.
• Formulate goals and outcomes based on assessment data.
• Revise plan of care based on patient’s condition, interdisciplinary input, and family needs.
• Prioritize patient interventions based on assessments and reassessments.
• Implement and evaluate nursing actions in accordance with the individualized patient/family plan of care and patient condition/needs.
  • Ensure the nursing and interdisciplinary plan of care are coordinated, implemented, evaluated, and revised as needed.
  • Identify the need for interdisciplinary involvement or outside resources and follow through.
  • Incorporate critical thinking into the delivery of clinical skills and analysis of patient response to orders, tests, labs, medications, and treatments.
  • Demonstrate clinical competence in administering interventions according to identified standards and age‑specific needs.
  • Provide or coordinate patient/family education with other disciplines, considering readiness to learn.
  • Coordinate with referring physicians and other operating physicians regarding patient/family care issues and scheduling procedures.
  • Accompany patients/families to rooms to help facilitate patient flow.
• Document accurate assessment, evaluation, modification, and patient’s response to therapy, changes in condition, and therapeutic interventions or procedures.
• Entries follow hospital policy regarding date, time, abbreviations, and legibility.
• Complete documentation within established timeframes (Admissions, Patient Flowsheets, IV Flowsheets, Family Education Records, Interdisciplinary Goals).
• Review and update computerized care plan to reflect the plan accurately.
• Verify accurate order entry and discharge instructions.
• Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.
• Perform physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section.
• Assist FCC Coordinator in arranging and coordinating appointments before delivery.
• Accept assignment to mentor student nurse observation experience in unit.
• Accept assignments to share/teach knowledge and provide clinical support as a relief preceptor for new staff.
• Seek opportunities to assist teammates during shift as needed.
• Accept and complete other assigned tasks in a professional manner.

Education Qualifications

• Associate’s Degree from an accredited school of nursing (required).
• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited school of nursing (required).

Experience Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year of RN experience (required).
• Experience with pediatric patients (preferred).
• Previous experience with EPIC (preferred).

Skills and Abilities

• Perform a variety of duties, often switching between tasks of different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.
• Perform under stressful conditions, handling multiple requests and demonstrating prioritization skills.

Licenses and Certifications

• RN – Registered Nurse (state or compact licensure) current and valid in Nebraska; upon hire required.
• BLS – Basic Life Support, American Heart Association, upon hire required.
• PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support (except NICU), within 180 days required.
• NRP – Neonatal Resuscitation (NICU only), within 180 days required.
• ACLS – within 9 months of hire (Cath Lab and ED only) required.
• ENPC – Emergency Nursing Pediatric Certification (ED only), within 1 year required.
• TNCC – Trauma Nursing Core Course (ED only), within 1 year required.
• For RNs in Radiology Nursing, complete all Radiology Nursing competencies required.
