The Registered Professional Nurse at Northside Hospital independently plans and provides professional nursing care to patients in accordance with physician orders, established guidelines, and the scope of practice as defined by the Georgia Nurse Practice Act. According to the American Nurses Association's (ANA) Nursing: Scope and Standards of Nursing Practice, 3rd Edition (2015), nursing involves the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through diagnosis and treatment of human responses, and advocacy for individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations. The scope of practice and standards depend on the nurse's education, experience, role, and population served.

At Northside Hospital, the practice of professional nursing aligns with ANA's Scope and Standards of Professional Practice, incorporating additional clinical practice components, and is classified into five domains:

  1. Clinical Knowledge and Practice: Assessment, Diagnosis, Outcomes Identification, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation; Clinical Information Systems (Documentation); Patient Care Technology.
  2. Professional Practice: Communication, Culturally Congruent Practice, Ethics, Professional Practice Evaluation, Resource Utilization.
  3. Leadership: Collaboration, Community Involvement, Environmental Health, Leadership.
  4. Professional Development: Education of Self and Others, Expansion of Knowledge, Advancement of Practice, Contribution to the Professional/Clinical Specialty.
  5. Evidence-Based Practice, Quality, and Research: Evidence-based Practice, Nursing Research, Quality of Practice, Patient Satisfaction Scores, External Reporting/Benchmarks.

The Staff Registered Professional Nurse III (Staff RN III) is licensed to practice in Georgia, in good standing without limitations, with at least two years of full-time experience as a registered nurse and holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), an Associate Degree (AD), or a Diploma in Nursing. The RN III manages the care of an assigned group of patients according to the philosophy and policies of the nursing division and the Northside Nursing Collaborative Care Model.

All professional nurses at Northside Hospital embody values of collaboration, communication, coordination, integration, and empowerment. The roles of nurses progress sequentially from novice to expert, with job descriptions for levels RN I to RN VI implying that a nurse at a specific level possesses the knowledge, skills, competencies, and critical thinking abilities of all lower levels. For example, the RN III role includes all provisions of RN I and II, plus additional specific requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES, LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:

  1. Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  2. Licensed as an RN in the State of Georgia in good standing without limitations.
  3. Must hold certification in the American Heart Association's Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES, LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION PREFERRED:

  1. BSN degree.
  2. Two (2) years of experience as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN).
  3. One (1) year of experience as an RN in Family Centered Care, Maternal Infant Unit, or Neonatal Intensive Care.
  4. Additional Life Support credentials (ACLS, PALS, NRP, etc.) or other clinical specialty certifications in specific units.
  5. Visual color acuity depending on the role in specific units.
