Job description

Responsibilities

• Support undergraduate instructional laboratories, including organic chemistry laboratory courses such as CHEM 008LA, CHEM 008LB, CHEM 008LC, CHEM 166, etc.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, faculty, staff, teaching assistants (TAs), student helpers, and students.
• Order and receive chemicals, non‑chemical supplies, safety items (personal protective equipment, PPEs), and laboratory equipment.
• Store chemicals according to hazard categories, maintain equipment and facilities, prepare reagents and student samples.
• Assist students and TAs at the stockroom counter.
• Set up equipment and laboratories for each experiment.
• Maintain and update check equipment, laboratories, and electronic records of supplies.
• Create, update, and maintain complete chemical inventories for all rooms under stockroom control.
• Generate waste tags and enter waste pick‑up information into the EH&S online database to ensure proper disposal of all chemical waste generated by teaching labs.
• Work as a team member and provide assistance to TAs with minor problems such as small spills.
• Take charge and inform responding agencies in case of more serious situations (e.g., student injuries).
• Advise teaching assistants regarding proper procedures for laboratory experiments and inform faculty and TAs of any known or anticipated pitfalls.
• Work 8 hours per day, with shift hours varying by course schedule—currently 1 pm to 10 pm during Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer quarters and 8 am–5 pm otherwise.

Compensation

The full salary range for the Staff Research Associate is $31.23–$50.24 per hour. The expected pay scale for this position is $31.23–$40.41 per hour. Base salary offers are based on considerations such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.
