Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Pending completion of training or licensing requirements, applicants may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the initial appointment requirements under previous standards are deemed to meet the basic requirements.
Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed if qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA Policy.
- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school.
- Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S. or its territories.
- Residency Training: Completion of an approved residency program leading to eligibility for board certification, approved by the VA.
- Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs eligible for appointment as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and appointed on an intermittent or fee basis.
- PRPs are not independent practitioners and will perform duties under supervision within a defined scope of practice. Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Additional Requirement: Board eligible or certified in Hematology and Medical Oncology, as participation in fellow and resident education is expected.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to perform heavy lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, bending, climbing, and other physical activities as specified.
Duties
- Provide care for patients with hematological and oncological disorders in outpatient and inpatient settings.
- Perform bone marrow aspirates and biopsies.
- Teach fellows, residents, medical students, and staff.
- Participate in multidisciplinary cancer care committees.
- Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00AM-4:30PM, with shared evening, weekend, and on-call duties.
