Job summary

Lumentum in San Jose is seeking a Sr. Optical Design Engineer to model optical trains in high-speed modules and perform tolerance analysis. You will work with the module team to ensure designs meet manufacturability and performance targets.

Responsibilities include optical modeling and optimization, communicating with suppliers, guiding DFMs, and mentoring new engineers. A Master's or PhD in optical engineering or physics and 5+ years in Zemax-based design are preferred.

Qualifications

• Master's or PhD in Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field.
• 5+ years of optical design and Zemax-based simulation experience.
• Experience with passive/active micro-optics and photonic chips preferred.
• Strong communication skills and ability to manage multiple projects.
• MATLAB proficiency is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Model optical trains in high-speed optical modules and analyze tolerances.
• Collaborate with module team to ensure manufacturability and performance.
• Communicate with suppliers/CMs for DFMs and feedback.
• Maintain knowledge of advanced technologies and propose optimal routes.
• Coordinate with Process, Testing, and Automation teams on DFMs and workflows.
• Train new optical engineers and perform peer reviews of designs.
