Job summary

Lumentum in San Jose is seeking a Staff Optical Design Engineer to model optical trains in high-speed modules and perform tolerance analysis in close collaboration with the module team to ensure robust optical system design. You will work with suppliers and CM/SDEs to implement manufacturability feedback, optimize designs for high manufacturability, and support failure analysis.

A Master’s or PhD in Optical Engineering or Physics with 5+ years of experience and Zemax proficiency is required.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in optical design and simulation using Zemax
• Strong ability to test optical devices, analyze test data, and communicate results effectively
• Experience in passive and active micro-optics, integrated photonic chips, and optical system testing is strongly preferred
• Strong communication skills
• Proficiency in MATLAB programming is a plus
• Ability to manage tasks across multiple projects simultaneously

Responsibilities

• Model optical trains and perform parameter optimization
• Simulate and calculate optical tolerances to guide design decisions
• Coordinate with suppliers/CM/SDEs for DFM input and feedback
• Collaborate with Process, Testing, and Automation teams to optimize assembly and test workflows
• Support failure analysis and train new optical engineers
