Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off the Eskenazi Health downtown campus, as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites throughout Indianapolis.
Job Role Summary
The Staff Nurse II provides clinical care and coordination skills for every patient served. This includes understanding the patient population, delivering nursing care using the Eskenazi Health Model of Care—Synergy, and coordinating with patients, families, and healthcare teams to meet patient needs.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Leadership & Communication
- Promotes a healthy work environment and encourages collaboration for excellent patient care outcomes.
- Performs nursing functions efficiently in accordance with policies, procedures, the Indiana Nursing Practice Act, and the Eskenazi Health Model of Care—Synergy, demonstrating characteristics like clinical judgment, advocacy, caring practices, collaboration, systems thinking, response to diversity, clinical inquiry, and facilitation of learning.
- Utilizes and documents the nursing process through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation, considering physiological, psychological, spiritual, and cultural needs.
- Engages patients/significant others with timely health information and shares written materials, documented in the medical record.
- Handles emergency situations promptly and professionally.
- Participates in professional development to maintain competencies and seek learning opportunities.
- Supports shared governance roles at unit and hospital levels to engage staff and achieve organizational goals.
Service
- Provides personalized care to ensure patient comfort and well-being, considering diverse needs.
- Performs hourly rounds to assess care and service quality.
- Provides timely feedback on customer service issues and participates in service recovery.
- Communicates effectively with staff, patients, families, physicians, and other departments.
Quality
- Maintains patient safety and advocates for quality care.
- Participates in clinical and operational performance improvement initiatives using evidence-based practices.
Financial and Operational Management
- Ensures care is aligned with patient needs.
- Facilitates patient throughput during shifts.
- Collaborates on staffing to meet census and care needs.
People
- Acts as a preceptor and supports staff development.
- Maintains positive, calming relationships and demonstrates excellent customer service.
Job Requirements
- Current Indiana RN license.
- RN degree from an accredited institution.
- Current BLS certification; additional certifications may be required for specific units.
- Minimum 1-year clinical nursing experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Operates specialized equipment and administers medications per policy.
- Effective communication skills tailored to patient age and needs.
- Knowledge of growth and development principles, and ability to assess patient data accordingly.
