Responsibilities

  • Administer patient care with a high degree of skill, as prescribed by a physician.
  • In accordance with physician orders, set priorities for nursing care for a patient group, such as selection and delegation of patient care assignments.
  • Establish nursing care goals for individuals or patient groups, formulate care plans, and motivate staff to follow plans.
  • Encourage nursing staff to identify with the team and value the role of health sciences in patient care.
  • Establish unit procedures for a coordinated approach to care of a patient group.
  • Explain departmental policies, report deficiencies, and evaluate new policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate nursing procedures to ensure staff can render effective care.
  • Establish short-range goals for patient instruction and rehabilitation, plan assignments, and assist in patient/family instruction.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Employees at this level participate in a patient care program byapplying nursing skills in direct patient care and by planning,demonstrating, and supervising patient care activities in anassigned area. They work under general supervision from adesignated supervisor.

Examples of Duties
  • administer patient care with a high degree of skill, as prescribedby a physician.
  • in accordance with the orders of physicians, programs and setspriorities for the administration of nursing care for a patientgroup, such selection and delegation of patient care assignmentsincluding consideration of staff capacity and special patient needs.
  • establishes nursing care goals for an individual patient or apatient group, formulates patient care plans, and motivates nursingpersonnel to follow plans and recognize the relationship of eachaspect of care to ultimate goals.
  • encourages other nursing personnel to identify with the nursingteam, to recognize their particular contribution, and to appreciatethe role of all health sciences in the group approach to patientcare.
  • establishes unit procedures to effect a coordinated approach to thecare of a patient group.
  • explains departmental and unit policies and procedures, identifiesand reports policy and procedural deficiencies, and evaluates newpolicies and procedures.
  • demonstrates nursing procedures and techniques to assure staff'sability to render effective care.
  • establishes short-range goals for patient instruction andrehabilitation, plans assignments of nursing personnel to implementthese goals, and assists in patient and family instruction.
  • performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nursewith the Illinois Department of Financial and ProfessionalRegulation, Division of Professional Regulation.

Illinois Residency Requirement:

Pursuant to the StateUniversities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates mustestablish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the startdate for this position.

Noparticipation other than submission of application materials isrequired from applicants that qualify to take the exam.
