Employees at this level perform personal care and nursingprocedures applying elementary nursing principles below thoserequiring full professional training as a registered nurse.

Examples of Duties
  • carries out or assists with diagnostic procedures, which mayinclude identifying and recording subjective symptoms, such aspain; observing and recording objective symptoms, such as bodyexcreta and discharge, temperature, pulse, respiration, bloodpressure, and changes in condition of body; collecting specimensfor the laboratory; taking height and weight; measuring andrecording intake and output of fluids; and performing certainlaboratory and diagnostic testing such as urine test, acetonespecific gravity, and may result in scheduling additionalprocedures, test, surgeries, and hospital admissions and obtainappropriate insurance authorization.
  • carries out therapeutic procedures, which may include applyingbinders and bandages, observing gastric-intestinal suctionapparatus for proper functioning, administering enemas, giving sitzor tub baths, and applying heat or cold, performs wound care,including dressing changes, splint and cast removal, suture andstaple removal.
  • meets physical needs of patient by providing for comfort andsafety, through such procedures as adjusting the bed, providingappropriate support, giving back rubs, feeding helpless patients,positioning patients, and adjusting side rails, restraints,traction devises, or trapeze.
  • in accordance with established nursing policies and procedures,administers oral medications and intramuscular, subcutaneous, andintradermal injections.
  • performs intravenous therapy, as directed by a registered nurseand/or physician.
  • identifies cessation of heartbeat or respiration, notifiesappropriate medical and nursing personnel, initiates resuscitation(such as external cardiac massage and restoration of breathing) andassists physician with preparation of medication or other treatmentas indicated.
  • maintains suitable environment for the patient by changing linens,tidying the premises, caring for equipment and ensuring that theroom is properly ventilated, heated, and lighted, prepares patientexam rooms and equipment. Maintains adequate inventory of clinicalsupplies.
  • administers, assists with, or teaches good personal hygiene toprovide comfort and cleanliness.
  • obtains the basic assessment data and brief history from patientdocumenting the information in accordance with prescribed clinicalprocedures, and communicates with patients to assess emotional andmental well-being; identifies and reports patients requiringspecial assistance.
  • escorts patient from waiting room and prepares patient forexamination and procedure, charts and reports nursing careactivities performed and reports all observations made, obtains thebasic assessment data and brief history from patient and documentsthe information in accordance with prescribed clinicalprocedures.
  • may assist in providing nursing care to patients with complexhealth needs.
  • assists with scrub and circulating nurse duties in surgicalprocedures, assists the health provider with examination and/orprocedure.
  • performs other related duties as assigned.

Illinois Residency Requirement: Pursuant to the StateUniversities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates mustestablish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the startdate for this position.

The Civil Serviceexamination for this classification is based on your applicationmaterials and responses to the supplemental questions. Noparticipation other than submission of application materials isrequired from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meetthe minimum required qualifications for this position, yourapplication will move forward for examination/testing in which youwill receive a score calculated based on your education andexperience, and your name will be placed on the active employmentregister by exam score. This score will be emailed to the emailaddress noted on your application. After the application deadline,the names within the top three scores will be referred to thedepartment for interview.
