Job summary

Boston College, a Jesuit university near downtown Boston, seeks a Staff Nurse/Registered Nurse for University Health Services. This full-time night position (35 hours/week, 39 weeks) provides inpatient care and triage for walk‑ins, with weekends and rotating shifts.

Hiring range: $42.91/hr to $53.65/hr; pay commensurate with experience. You will perform nursing assessments, coordinate referrals and tests, communicate findings to physicians and a multidisciplinary team, and support campus health

Qualifications

  • MA license as a Registered Nurse.
  • At least three years of experience in ambulatory, emergency, or college health.
  • EMR experience is required.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Experience in university settings preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Identify patient service requirements by establishing rapport with patients and others.
  • Follow the nursing process to assess and treat patients.

Job Description

Staff Nurse/Registered Nurse (35 hours/week for 39 weeks)

The Staff Nurse/Registered Nurse working for University Health Services provides physical, psychological, and emotional care on a 10-bed inpatient unit as well as assessing/treating walk-in patients in an emergent/urgent care setting. The nurse will be responsible for:

  • identifying patient service requirements by establishing personal rapport with potential and actual patients and other persons to understand patient needs;
  • following the nursing process;
  • evaluating patients seeking medical or emergency treatment/advice by performing a thorough nursing assessment, providing first-aid treatment and communicating findings to treating practitioners; communicating test/lab findings to treating practitioners. The nurse will be responsible for coordinating treatment by communicating with the multidisciplinary team, which includes but is not limited to, physicians, nurses, administration, counseling, BC Police Department, and emergency rooms;
  • arranging for referrals, tests, transportation, and admissions;
  • resolving patient needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies; and
  • providing counseling regarding health care practices and prescribed medical treatment.

Each staff member in the Division of Student Affairs is expected to support division and university-wide initiatives, staff events, and serve on committees as needed.

This is a full time, benefitted position. The schedule is full time nights with one evening shift every other week. The weekend shifts are 7pm-7am Saturday and Sunday (every other weekend), every Friday 7pm-7am, every other Thursday 7pm-7am, and every other Monday 3pm-11pm rotating between 32 and 36 hours per week.

Schedule:
First week - Sunday OFF, Mon 3-11, Tues OFF, Wed OFF, Thurs OFF, Fri 7-7, Sat 7-7
Second week - Sunday 7-7, Mon OFF, Tues OFF, Wed OFF, Thurs 7-7, Fri 7-7, Sat OFF

Each staff member in the Division of Student Affairs is expected to support division and university-wide initiatives, staff events, and serve on committees as needed.

Hiring Range: $42.91/hr to $53.65/hr. Pay rate commensurate with relevant experience.

Requirements
  • Registered Nurse with MA license.
  • At least three years of experience in an ambulatory, emergency or college health setting.
  • Electronic Medical Record experience is required.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively while fostering a positive, inclusive, and productive environment for patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Experience working in a university setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience in ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations, policies, and best practices, as well as participating in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Experience in coordinating health services and liaising with other health care professionals.
  • Strong attention to detail.
