Job summary

Uber’s Applied AI team is hiring a Staff ML Engineer to define and lead the foundation model strategy powering discovery experiences across Mobility and Delivery. You will shape technical direction, influence product roadmaps, and deliver measurable impact at global scale.

You will own end-to-end ML strategy for foundation models across search, recommendations and conversational AI, mentor senior engineers, and drive multi-team initiatives spanning retrieval, ranking and personalization across

Qualifications

• Master's degree or PhD in CS, Engineering or Mathematics.
• 8+ years of ML experience with large-scale DL systems.
• Ownership of high-impact ML systems in search, recommendations or conversational AI.
• Deep expertise in transformers, retrieval, ranking and embeddings.
• Strong PyTorch experience and distributed training.
• Proven ability to influence technical direction across teams.
• Strong product intuition tying model improvements to business outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Own the end-to-end technical strategy for foundation models across search, recommendations, and conversational AI.
• Drive architecture decisions affecting multiple product surfaces (Eats, Grocery, Retail, Mobility).
• Lead cross-team initiatives spanning retrieval, ranking, personalization, and LLM-powered assistants.
• Define long-term investments: build vs fine-tune vs partner models.
• Mentor senior engineers and act as a technical multiplier across the org.
