Staff Instrument & Controls Engineer - Oil, Gas & Chemical (Houston)

Join Burns & McDonnell as a Staff Instrument & Controls Engineer in our Houston, TX office within the Oil, Gas & Chemical Global Practice. You will work on minor and major EPC projects serving mid-stream, refining, chemical, and renewable industries.

The role involves collaborating with design teams to create world-class designs for grassroots and revamp/brownfield projects. You will be involved throughout the EPC process, including engineering, procurement, and construction, ensuring compliance with standards, budgets, and schedules. You will also support Front End Planning (FEP), Detailed Design, and construction phases.

Responsibilities include:
  • Preparing instrumentation engineering/design deliverables such as Instrument Index, Data Sheets, Installation Details, Location Plans, Wiring, and Loop Diagrams.
  • Developing control systems (DCS/PLC) and CEMS Data Sheets.
  • Creating controls design deliverables including I/O lists, Control Narratives, Graphics, Cause & Effect Diagrams, and Alarm Rationalization; managing third-party control system suppliers and participating in FAT.
  • Preparing I&C purchase specifications, reviewing bids, and managing vendor documentation.
  • Developing P&ID's for various projects.
  • Performing process measurements and selecting appropriate I&C applications based on technology knowledge.
  • Conducting preliminary sizing calculations for instruments and control valves.
  • Creating level sketches in collaboration with other departments.
  • Applying knowledge of engineering principles, codes, and procedures.
  • Providing leadership and guidance to less experienced engineers.
  • Ensuring compliance with safety policies.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, or related field from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Master's degree may substitute for 1 year of experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of applicable engineering experience; consulting experience preferred.
  • FE or EIT certification is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering techniques, procedures, and standards.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI) and Microsoft Office.
  • Attention to detail, teamwork, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to obtain a TWIC card.
