Job summary

BlackLine Systems Inc is seeking a Sr. Staff II Engineer to design, develop and scale cloud-based backend services. You will mentor engineers, drive automation and ensure secure, maintainable code across releases.

Strong CS fundamentals and distributed systems experience are required; familiarity with AI-assisted development is a plus. You will collaborate in a fast-paced SaaS environment with emphasis on performance and quality, owning critical components and guiding best practices.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in Computer Science with 5+ years’ experience.
• 7+ years building Web Apps, SaaS, RESTful APIs.
• Experience using AI-powered coding assistants to accelerate development and automation.
• Strong SQL knowledge, data models, transactions.
• Familiarity with distributed systems, SOA, and design patterns.

Job Overview

Make Your Mark: BlackLine¯SaaS is the system of interaction for finance and accounting teams and it integrates with numerous ERPs, CRMs, payment systems, point of sale systems and other applications. As a Sr. Staff II Engineer, you will play a crucial role in delivering high quality releases to our customers by designing, developing, troubleshooting, maintaining, optimizing and scaling BlackLine’s cloud‑based backend services and driving innovation into our product suite.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and deliver product features, while adhering to timelines, coding standards, requirements, and quality.
• Implement, refine, and enforce software development techniques to ensure that delivered features meet software integration, performance, security, and maintainability expectations.
• Maintain high standards of software quality and technical excellence within the team by establishing good practices and habits and writing clean, testable, maintainable, and secure code.
• Inspire a forward‑thinking team of developers, acting as an agent of change and evangelist for a quality‑first culture within the organization.
• Mentor and coach junior team members and guide them to solutions.
• Proactively identify issues, bottlenecks, gaps, or other areas of concern or opportunity and work to either directly affect change, or advocate for that change by working with peers and leadership to build consensus and take action.
• Perform critical maintenance, deployment, and release support activities, including occasional off‑hours support.
• Adaptable team player with strong collaboration skills and a focus on results and value delivery.
• Passion for engineering excellence, curiosity and demonstrated ability of continuous learning.

Qualifications

• BS degree in Computer Science plus 5 year's experience, or MS degree in Computer Science.
• 7+ years of hands‑on experience in building Web Applications, SaaS products, and RESTful APIs.
• Proficiency in leveraging AI‑powered coding assistants (e.g., Claude, Cursor) to accelerate development, generate optimized code, and troubleshoot complex technical challenges.
• Demonstrated experience using AI tools to automate engineering tasks, such as writing unit tests, generating documentation, and improving overall process efficiency.
• Adept at using AI for rapid research and problem‑solving, including the exploration of new technologies, analysis of unfamiliar codebases, and evaluation of alternative design patterns.
• Experience with front‑end technologies (HTML, JavaScript, CSS, JavaScript Frameworks, etc.) is a plus.
• A solid computer science foundation including data structures, algorithms, and design patterns, with a proven track record of software design and architecture of complex systems.
• Experience in service‑oriented architecture and in building distributed systems.
• Advanced knowledge of SQL, including stored procedures, data models, and transactional flows.
• Prior working experience in Scrum, or other Agile development methodologies, is preferred.
• Passion for engineering excellence through automation, unit testing, and process improvements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with PostgreSQL and NoSQL databases.
• Experience with open source tools.
• Experience with public cloud architectures (Azure, ASW or GCP) and cloud native services.
• Experience designing and scaling high performance systems.
• Experience with container management solutions like Docker or Kubernetes.
• Experience with API gateway, identity management, authentication, messaging platforms (e.g: Kafka, SQS, RabbitMQ), workflow orchestration tools, job scheduling and search.
• FinTech or Financial services domain background.

Payment and Benefits

Salary Range: $225,000.00-$282,000.00

Pay Transparency Statement: Placement within this range depends upon several factors, including the applicant's prior relevant job experience, skill set, and geographic location.

In addition to base pay, BlackLine also offers short‑term and long‑term incentive programs, based on eligibility, along with a robust offering of benefit and wellness plans.

For roles that include variable incentive components such as an Incentive Compensation Plan (ICP) or On‑Target Earnings (OTE), the compensation structure may follow a split model – for example, a 50/50, 70/30, or 60/40 ratio between base salary and variable incentive.
