Halff Associates, Inc. in Tampa, FL seeks a Staff Geologist II, Environmental Engineer, or Environmental Scientist to join our growing team. The candidate will perform field investigations, support Phase I/II projects, and assist with regulatory reporting.

The role requires at least 4 years of experience, a bachelor’s in geology or related field, and a path toward PG/PE licensure. Travel and fieldwork are involved, with opportunities to mentor and develop professionally.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in geology, earth science, or engineering; capable of obtaining a PG or PE license; Master’s or Ph.D. is a plus.
  • At least 4 years of experience with Phase I ESA, Phase II ESA, soil sampling, groundwater sampling, site assessment, brownfields, remediation, groundwater monitoring, and fieldwork.
  • Current Professional Geoscientist in training (GIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license, or willing to obtain within four years.
  • Ability to access federal facilities or obtain Common Access Card (CAC).
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel for fieldwork.
  • Experience coordinating and completing technical field investigations for multi‑media sampling projects.
  • Understanding of geological principles, soil mechanics, exposure pathways, and regulatory data interpretation.
  • Ability to conduct geological fieldwork including logging of boreholes and test pits.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting.
  • Proficiency with regulatory compliance and safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate and support field investigations, including environmental media sampling, groundwater monitoring, and site characterization.
  • Support documentation and reporting for regulatory agencies and compliance programs.
  • Complete Phase I and Phase II projects.
  • Support field efforts for DoD installations/bases.
  • Prepare Phase I ESA/Phase II reports, Site-Safety Plans, QAPPs, Waste Management Plans, and data summaries.
  • Communicate with clients for access and data to support Phase I/II.
  • Build relationships with clients and internal teams as a trusted advisor.
  • Be open to training on fieldwork, data interpretation, and reporting.
  • Engage in professional development and stay current with industry practices.
  • Oversee multiple projects and ensure deadlines are met.

Staff Geologist II / Environmental Scientist / Environmental Engineer

Halff has an immediate opening for a Staff Geologist II, Environmental Engineer, or Environmental Scientist to join our established and growing team located in our Tampa, FL office.

As a Staff Geologist II they will collaborate with Staff Geologists/Environmental PMs on completing Phase I and Phase II projects, support aspects of complex projects, provide support as needed, coordinate with clients and support field efforts.

The ideal candidate would have at least 4 years of experience and be able to perform field tasks independently and hold a Professional Geoscientist in training (GIT) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or a related field.

What you will do
  • Collaborate and provide support for field investigations, including environmental media sampling, groundwater monitoring, and site characterization.
  • Support documentation and reporting for State Departments of Environmental Protection/Commission on Environmental Quality, RCRA, and CERCLA.
  • Complete Phase I and Phase II projects.
  • Support field efforts for Department of Defense installations/bases.
  • Prepare Phase I ESA Reports, Phase II Reports, Site‑Safety Health Plans, QAPPs, Waste Management Plans, data summary tables, and support completion of state‑required regulatory documentation.
  • Communicate with clients for property access and site data to support Phase I and Phase II.
  • Build relationships to become a trusted advisor to clients, both internal and external.
  • Be receptive to training and guidance on fieldwork, data interpretation, and reporting.
  • Participate in professional development through guidance.
  • Stay up‑to‑date with industry trends, technological advancements, and best practices in environmental remediation and compliance.
What you will need

  • Problem‑solving aptitude to support complex field and reporting challenges.
  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards, regulations, and safety protocols.
  • Project management skills to oversee multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal regulatory programs to achieve cleanup goals and/or site closure.
  • Additional skills in regulatory compliance, stormwater, spill prevention, and general permitting requirements are a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to support mobilizations/travel for up to 10 days at a time.
  • Ability to sit or stand at a desk and work on a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds and navigate job sites and construction areas.
  • Ability to work prolonged periods in the field (over 8 hours per day) including standing, squatting, and lifting.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, etc.).
