Job Summary

Performs a variety of duties related to campus safety, security, emergency preparedness, and public order maintenance in accordance with the mission, goals, and objectives of the East Georgia State College Police Department. Augments departmental protection services, in a non-sworn capacity, through preventive patrol, safety / security inspections, coordination of emergency preparedness drills, delivery of instructional programming and enforcement of college policies. Provides support services to law enforcement and assists first responders by performing functions and activities not exclusively reserved for sworn peace officers. This is a position of Trust.

Responsibilities

Patrol

• Engages in visible safety / security patrol functions on foot and in vehicles to render service or aid, to ensure the security of persons and property, and to support the maintenance of public order. Responsible for afterhours building security in accordance with the East Georgia State College Building Access and Security Policy.

Call Response

• Responds to, addresses, and documents alarm calls, medical emergencies / injuries, crisis situations, motor vehicle crashes, calls for service, complaints, lost / recovered property, reports of damage, public nuisance, criminal activity, suspicious circumstances, or hazardous / unsafe conditions. Contacts and coordinates with E-911, law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical responders. Provides on-scene support and assistance to first responders and/or sworn law enforcement personnel.
• Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergencies and disasters to include directing traffic, administering emergency medical aid, lifting, dragging and removing people from dangerous situations and securing and evacuating people from areas.

Policy Enforcement

• Enforces East Georgia State College policies and parking regulations through administrative referral. May issue citations for select local ordinance violations, if authorized by local governing authority.

Emergency Preparedness

• Coordinates emergency preparedness drills. Ensures the rescue readiness of emergency response / safety equipment through regularly scheduled inspections. Coordinates and/or delivers instructional presentations on emergency preparedness and general safety.

Training

• Fulfills annual training requirements as prescribed by East Georgia State College and the Department.

Other Duties as Assigned

• Assumes other duties as may be assigned by the Police Sergeant or Chief of Police / Director of Public Safety.

Required Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED equivalent.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, such as prior military service or previous experience in security, law enforcement, fire services or as an emergency medical first responder.
• Be eligible to occupy a position of trust as determined through a comprehensive background check, pursuant to the regulations of East Georgia State College and the Board of Regents. Requirements will include, at a minimum: an oral interview, a background investigation, a state and federal fingerprint/biometric-based criminal history check, a nationwide sex offender search, a social security number check, a credit history check, a medical examination, a drug screening, a psychological screening, an employment history check, and the verification of at least three professional/personal references.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ ABILITIES / WORK ENVIRONMENT

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand or sit for prolonged periods, walk, run while changing direction, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear, see, smell and engage in repetitive motions. The employee may be required to move or drag persons weighing up to 150 pounds. The employee may be required to defend against physically combative persons or assist law enforcement with subduing or restraining physically combative persons. The employee frequently uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of manual dexterity. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, distinguishment between shades of color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The work is performed in buildings and outdoors, occasionally in extreme hot, cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and hazardous or physically dangerous situations. Work requires the use of protective devices such as ballistic vests, masks, goggles, gloves, etc. as well as other specialized law enforcement equipment.

The work schedule is shift work based on the needs of the College. Employees must have the ability to work flexible shift hours and schedules that include weekends, holidays, and evenings. Employees may be required to remain on duty beyond a normal shift and must be available to report for duty without prior notice due to on-call status, special events, emergencies or personnel shortages.
