Job summary

The City of Pittsburgh seeks a Staff Engineer (Traffic Bureau) to enhance safe and efficient movement through the city. You will analyze street conditions, plan data collection for traffic analysis, review signing and pavement markings, and oversee signal timing plans and repaving coordination.

Responsibilities include field inspections, project management of traffic projects, and ensuring compliance with federal/state/local laws.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree from a fully accredited Civil Engineering program.
• Applicants in final semester may apply but must graduate before hire.
• Total Qualifying Requirement: 4 years (education and/or work).
• Engineering in Training Certification must be obtained within ninety (90) days of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Plans and coordinates design and/or management of complex, multidiscipline Capital projects (e.g., water and sewers, traffic and streets, bridges).
• Conducts non-complex engineering calculations and designs.
• Assigns and directs work of related professionals and clerical staff on a project basis.
• Reviews shop drawings and internal research studies for traffic operations or safety.
• Reviews reports to monitor progress and identify problems; recommends change orders and payments.
• Identifies hazards and advises Project Manager; implements corrective action to meet schedule and budget.
• Meets with representatives of other government agencies, City Departments, consultants, contractors, and the public on proposed projects.
• Directs work performed in-house and under consultant/contractor agreements.
• Ensures RFPs, specs, designs, contract provisions, bid documents comply with laws.
• Initiates payment forms for consultants/contractors.
• Maintains records and prepares reports and correspondence.
• Performs field work including data gathering and inspections for traffic projects.
• Performs other related tasks and duties as assigned.

Education

Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related Civil Engineering field

Engineering in Training Certification (within 90 days)
