Job description

GEICO is seeking an experienced Staff Engineer to join our PaaS Messaging team. This team is dedicated to building high-performance, low-maintenance, zero-downtime platforms and applications. You will play a key role in driving our insurance business transformation as we shift from a traditional IT model to a technology-driven organization focused on engineering excellence, fostering a culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

1. Collaborate with engineering leaders to innovate, build, and enhance systems, and identify new opportunities for applying your expertise.
2. Lead the development and execution of a technical roadmap to improve product delivery speed and engineering capabilities.
3. Provide technical leadership across multiple areas, influencing enterprise-wide strategies.
4. Work with product managers, customers, and engineering teams to solve complex problems.
5. Develop strategies for software development within the Platform Engineering domain.
6. Ensure solutions are of high quality, usable, and performant.
7. Mentor and coach engineering staff, influence technical standards, and foster best practices.
8. Analyze costs, forecast resource needs, and support operational processes.
9. Participate in on-call and operational support duties.

Qualifications

1. Deep hands-on experience in complex system design, data pipelines, and scalable distributed systems.
2. Proficiency in at least one OOP language such as Java, Go, Python, or C++.
3. Experience with open-source messaging and event streaming platforms like Kafka, Pulsar, or ActiveMQ, with understanding of core concepts.
4. Experience building Kafka Connectors or similar tooling.
5. Ability to influence engineering direction and product roadmaps through experimentation and design.
6. Experience with continuous delivery, infrastructure as code, and cloud services like AWS, GCP, or Azure.
7. Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and analytical problem-solving.
8. Familiarity with developer tooling throughout the SDLC, including CI/CD pipelines and monitoring tools.
9. Experience in building enterprise-scale messaging platforms.

Experience & Education

1. Minimum 6+ years of professional experience, with at least 4+ years in open-source frameworks.
2. 3+ years in architecture and design, and experience with cloud services.
3. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.

Additional Information

Salary range: $105,000 - $230,000 annually, based on experience and other factors.
