Fastly in San Francisco, CA is seeking a Staff Backend Software Engineer for the Monetization Platform Team to design, build, and own billing infrastructure, usage APIs, and related backend services.

This role focuses on high availability, scalable systems, collaboration with cross-functional teams, on-call duties, and mentoring engineers. The position offers growth opportunities and equity.

Overview

Staff Backend Software Engineer - Monetization Platform Team. The Monetization Platform owns billing infrastructure, usage APIs, usage reporting, and orderability. You will lead design and development of highly-available, scalable systems as the platform expands.

• Design, ship, and own billing infrastructure, usage APIs, and backend services through implementation, testing, production rollout, and on-call support.

What We’re Looking For / Qualifications

• Hands-on experience designing and operating highly available, reliable data pipelines and distributed systems that process large volumes of data at scale — typically 7+ years for Staff level.


• 5+ years building systems that collect, aggregate, and derive insights from large datasets, with forecasting or reporting features used by stakeholders.


• Ability to own multi-week projects end-to-end from design through post-launch.


• Focus on data quality and downstream impact: consider the needs of downstream users and operators in design.


• Experience with testing and observability; can name a metric added that paid off and one you would delete.


• Relational and non-relational storage systems (MySQL, BigQuery, Dynamo, Cassandra, etc.).


• Pub/sub style message queues (NSQ, Kafka, Google Pub/Sub, Kinesis).


• Experience with coding agents as part of daily workflow.


• Nice-to-have: experience with billing or finance systems, RESTful API design (OpenAPI, versioning, idempotency), Go development, cloud technologies.

Work Hours & Location

• Core business hours Pacific Time; occasional nights and weekends for on-call support.


• Open to San Francisco, CA, USA; hybrid work model.
