Job summary

Carrier Global Corporation in the United States seeks a Staff Controls Engineer to lead design, verification, and delivery of robust control solutions for HVAC and refrigeration systems. This on-site role engages global teams in full lifecycle development, from concept to field support, across a diverse product portfolio.

The role requires advanced control theory, MATLAB/Simulink, model-based testing (MIL/SIL/HIL), and plant-model calibration to deliver high‑quality control software and hardware

Qualifications

  • BS or MS/PhD in engineering with 5–7+ years in controls.
  • Proficient in feedback, linear/nonlinear, multivariable control and optimization.
  • Experience with MATLAB-based toolsets for embedded controls and testing.
  • Experience with vapor-compression cycles and turbomachinery is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development of robust production-ready control solutions per requirements and standards.
  • Set technical goals, manage timelines, coordinate teams, and mitigate risks.
  • Support system-level requirements and Decompose low-level control requirements.
  • Develop control algorithms, system identification, robustness, and stability analyses.
  • Calibrate physics-based plant models for design exploration and validation.
  • Develop and execute unit and integration tests; perform hands-on lab testing.

About The Role

We are seeking a talented, highly motivated, and results‑driven Staff Controls Engineer with expertise in control systems specification, design, architecture, programming, and verification. This role focuses on delivering innovative and robust control solutions across a broad range of HVAC and refrigeration systems.

The Staff Controls Engineer will work with global, cross‑disciplinary teams to design, develop, test, troubleshoot, and support control systems throughout the full lifecycle—from conceptual design and model‑based development to lab validation and field trial support. This position offers the opportunity to engage with multiple business units and contribute to a diverse product portfolio.

The selected candidate will work daily from one of the following primary locations:

  • Kennesaw, GA: 1025 Cobb Place Boulevard, 30144

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and delivery of robust, production‑ready control solutions by ensuring compliance with customer and technical requirements, industry standards, and best practices.
  • Drive project execution by setting clear technical goals, managing timelines, and coordinating teams. Mitigate risks, align stakeholders, and ensure on‑time, high‑quality delivery.
  • Support system‑level requirement definition and drive low‑level control requirement decomposition.
  • Perform dynamic analysis of non‑linear systems in development of control algorithms including system identification, controllability, robustness, stability, and optimization.
  • Support the development and calibration of physics‑based plant models. Utilize models for design exploration, control system analysis, verification, and validation.
  • Develop & execute unit‑tests & integration tests for control system.
  • Perform hands‑on testing in psychrometric laboratory and analyze results to direct refinements to plant model fidelity and control algorithms.
  • Apply best‑in‑class strategies to push testing further upstream in the development lifecycle (MIL/SIL/HIL).
  • Support strategic initiatives to improve organizational quality and efficiency through technology advancement and process improvement.
Required Qualifications
  • B.S. in Electrical, Control Systems, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering with 7+ years of controls system experience
  • OR: M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical, Control Systems, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering with 5+ years of controls system experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficient knowledge of controls engineering foundations, including feedback control, linear/nonlinear control, multivariable control, system identification, and optimization.
  • Proficient in the use of MATLAB‑based toolsets to design, implement, and test embedded controls algorithms.
  • Experience with industrial control applications.
  • Excellent communication skills and a proven track record of delivering results through effective teamwork.
  • Experience with vapor‑compression cycles, including heat exchangers and turbomachinery compression technologies.
  • Experience in requirements management and system integration, specifically test strategies across model‑in‑the-loop (MIL), software‑in‑the-loop (SIL), and hardware‑in‑the-loop (HIL) domains.
  • Strong technical writing skills with ability to produce clear, concise documentation.
  • Experience with software development lifecycle practices, including version control, change management, release management.
  • Familiarity with PLC‑based or embedded control architectures.
  • Familiar with system optimization techniques and their application to modeling and system design.
  • Knowledge of acausal modeling languages such as Modelica.
Pay Range

The annual salary for this position is between $96,000.00 - $192,000.00 annually. Factors which may affect pay within this range include, but are not limited to, skills, education, experience, and other unique qualifications of the successful candidate.

Other Compensation

This position is entitled to short‑term cash incentives, subject to plan requirements.
