Job summary

ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) seeks a civil/structural engineer to perform code compliance evaluations of building products, develop acceptance criteria, and write evaluation reports. You will assist building departments nationwide and may attend ICC-ES hearings.

The role requires a civil/structural engineering degree, PE license, and at least five years in construction or code-related work. Travel for meetings and conferences will be required.

Qualifications

  • University degree in civil or structural engineering.
  • Professional registration/license to practice engineering.
  • Career-level proficiency in at least one engineering specialty, and foundation-level proficiency in at least one additional specialty.
  • At least five years of experience in the construction industry, building code development or enforcement, or product testing.
  • Experience with modern design and construction methods and materials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with both technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to independently solve complex engineering problems.
  • Ability to work as part of a team to deliver professional services.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the codes and design standards.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of test standards and methodologies.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of quality control processes for the manufacture of building products.
  • Contributes to development through membership in relevant technical organizations such as ASTM, ACI, UL, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate test reports, calculations, and other technical data submitted by evaluation-report applicants.
  • Develop technical criteria for the acceptance of innovative building products and methods.
  • Prepare correspondence and draft reports regarding code compliance of products.
  • Provide expert assistance to building departments throughout the United States.
  • Participate in ICC-ES Evaluation Committee hearings.
  • Represent ICC-ES on matters of interest at meetings with government and industry representatives.
  • Keep abreast of developments in codes and compliance building field.
  • Travel as necessary to attend conferences, meetings, speaking engagements, and other functions.
  • Evaluate products such as glass guardrails, SIPs, metal composite panels, Magnesium oxide boards, plastics, steel, concrete, and wood.

ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) is the industry leader in performing technical evaluations of building products, materials and systems for code compliance. This includes our testing services and product certification.

Position Summary:

Performs duties of a technical and often complex nature including determining the code compliance of building products, materials and methods; developing ICC-ES acceptance criteria; and writing ICC-ES evaluation reports.

Essential Functions:
  • Evaluates test reports, calculations, and other technical data submitted by evaluation-report applicants.
  • Develops technical criteria for the acceptance of innovative building products, materials and methods that are alternatives to what may be specified in the building code.
  • Prepares correspondence and draft reports regarding the code compliance of products.
  • Provides expert assistance to building departments throughout the United States.
  • Participates in ICC-ES Evaluation Committee hearings.
  • Represents ICC-ES on matters of interest at meetings of technical bodies and at meetings with representatives of government and industry.
  • Keeps abreast of developments in the codes and compliance building field.
  • Travels as necessary to attend conferences, meetings, speaking engagements, and other functions.
  • Willing to evaluate products such as, but not limited to, glass guardrails, structural insulated panels, metal composite panels, magnesium oxide boards, plastic sheathing, plastic composite decking, along with other materials including steel, concrete, and wood products.
Requirements
Essential Skills and Education/Experience:
  • University degree in civil or structural engineering.
  • Professional registration/license to practice engineering.
  • Career-level proficiency in at least one engineering specialty, and foundation-level proficiency in at least one additional specialty.
  • At least five years of experience in the construction industry, building code development or enforcement, or product testing; or equivalent experience as determined by ICC-ES.
  • Experience with modern design and construction methods and materials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with both technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to independently solve complex engineering problems.
  • Ability to work as part of a team to deliver professional services.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the codes and design standards.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of test standards and methodologies.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of quality control processes for the manufacture of building products.
  • Contributes to development through membership in relevant technical organizations such as ASTM, ACI, UL, etc.
  • Contributes to development through membership on a technical committee of a standards-writing organization.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Leads by example, establishing technical expertise.
  • Proficient in seismic design would be considered a plus.
  • Experience with product testing in general would be considered a plus.
  • Experience with fire testing would be considered a plus.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer or desk.
  • Occasional standing, walking, and reaching to access files or office supplies
  • Manual dexterity for typing, filing, and handling office equipment.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds occasionally (e.g., office supplies, documents).
  • Visual acuity to read printed and digital materials.
  • Auditory ability to communicate effectively in person, in videoconferences, and using a telephone.
  • May need to climb stairs in multi-level office building.
Environmental Conditions:
  • Indoor Office Environment.
  • Must be able to work in standard office environment with artificial lighting and climate control.
