Staff Engineer, Embedded Software – Manufacturing Test Engineering (Advanced EO)

Location: Rolling Meadows, IL – On‑site, full‑time.

Relocation assistance: None. Clearance required at start: Yes (Secret + SAP). Travel: Yes, 10% of the time.

Overview

Join Northrop Grumman Mission Systems as a Staff Engineer responsible for software used in testing Electro‑Optical Infrared (EOIR) production hardware. You will work in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment, collaborating with product design, test hardware, QA, and manufacturing teams to launch new products and maintain high‑quality test capabilities.

Responsibilities
  • Lead software architecture strategy, cost account management, and project planning for manufacturing acceptance test software supporting multiple Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) and system‑level testing.
  • Collaborate with the Integrated Product Team (IPT) to coordinate cross‑functional test software development from requirements capture through final validation and release, driving collaboration among product design engineers, test hardware engineers, quality assurance engineers, and manufacturing technicians.
  • Delegate technical tasks across approximately six embedded software engineers for significant Non‑Recurring Engineering (NRE) work to establish a new production line.
  • Design, integrate, validate, and release software for acceptance testing of LRUs and system‑level sell‑off.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for manufacturing acceptance test, environmental screening procedures, and drawings of test equipment and fixtures.
  • Review product testability and collaborate with design engineering to achieve testability in new and updated product designs.
  • Break down complex projects into executable tasks, estimate effort, manage risks, and communicate status, challenges, and risks to management.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical and/or Computer Engineering or a related STEM field with a minimum of 12 years of relevant work experience; OR a Master’s degree with a minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience designing high‑level structure of complex software systems.
  • Experience using C#.
  • Experience using Agile practices and performing Earned Value.
  • Experience leading software development teams, including scope identification, task designation, decision making, and project status meetings.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance with additional customer specified (SAP) clearance prior to start.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 12 or more years of experience in electronic hardware manufacturing environment and/or electronic hardware software or firmware design environment.
  • Experience using Unified Modeling Language (UML) to develop structural and behavioral software models.
  • Experience in Markdown/Visual Studio Code.
  • Experience with EOIR test instruments (e.g., oscilloscope, signal generator, collimators, black bodies, target wheels, power meters).
  • Experience with EOIR tests such as Modular Transfer Function (MTF), Non‑Uniformity Correction (NUC), Noise‑Equivalent Irradiance (NEI), operability, etc.
  • Experience generating test data outputs optimized for long‑term trend analysis.
  • Experience troubleshooting unit under test.
  • Experience using GitHub.

Salary Range

Primary level salary range: $169,000.00 – $253,600.00. The range is a general guideline; actual offers are based on scope, experience, education, and market conditions. Overtime, shift differential, and discretionary bonuses may also be available.
