Job summary

Google is seeking a Staff Engineer for BigQuery Managed Storage in Seattle. You will own outcomes, influence stakeholders, and tackle ambiguous problems while shaping BigQuery architecture and future directions.

This role sits in the BigQuery team working on storage components for massive data processing and coordinating across product managers and customers. The position emphasizes leadership in a matrixed organization, data analytics experience with Iceberg/Spark/Flink, and a strong background

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 8 years of experience building and developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage, or hardware architecture.
• 5 years of experience in the Data Analytics ecosystem (e.g., Iceberg, Spark, Flink, Pandas, Arrow).

Preferred qualifications:

• Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
• 10 years of experience building and developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage, or hardware architecture.
• 8 years of experience with data structures and algorithms.
• 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
• 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional, or cross-business projects.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement storage components to support large‑scale data processing for both open source software (OSS) and BigQuery.
• Design and implement tests and experiments to evaluate and monitor the performance of the system.
• Use the full battery of tools and instrumentation to develop, test, and rollout features.
• Coordinate with product engineers, Product Managers and customers to grow the business.
