Job summary

Boston Dynamics is looking for a Staff Electrical Engineer to join our Atlas team. You will design compact electronics used in dense electromechanical systems and work hands-on in the lab to build and debug electrical subsystems for humanoid robots.

The role requires 5+ years in electronics design, power electronics, motor drives, and high-speed data technologies, with collaboration across mechanical and firmware teams. EVT experience and Linux tooling are essential.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in Electrical Engineering.
• 5+ years of experience designing electronics.

• Experience with motors and motor drives.
• Experience implementing ethernet, PCIe, or other high speed data technologies.
• HDI and heavy copper layout experience.
• PCB fabrication and assembly knowledge.
• Proficiency in Python, C/C++, or MATLAB; strong Linux CLI.
• SolidWorks or similar mechanical CAD knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Design electronics for robotic actuators and end-effectors.
• Develop circuit designs for motor drives, power supplies, sensing, MCUs, and high-speed communications.
• Analyze and optimize circuit designs using SPICE and simulation.
• Design PCB layouts for highly integrated assemblies with HDI and heavy copper techniques.
• Collaborate with mechanical engineers to miniaturize PCBs and improve reliability.
• Conduct failure analysis and debug complex systems using circuit fundamentals.
• Develop design and test documentation and execute EVT.
• Use Linux command-line tools to configure networks, run software on robots, and interact with firmware.
• Use lab equipment to validate designs and debug hard problems.

Boston Dynamics is looking for a Staff Electrical Engineer to join our Atlas team. As a Staff Electrical Engineer at Boston Dynamics, you will play a pivotal role in the evolution of Atlas, our advanced humanoid robot. Every day you will work on designing compact, reliable electronics used in dense electromechanical systems. You will frequently work hands-on, in the lab, building and debugging electrical systems, ranging from small test setups to fully integrated robots. What You’ll Do

• Design electronics that comprise advanced robotic actuators and end-effectors
• Develop circuit designs for motor drives, power supplies, analog sensing, microcontrollers, and high-speed communications by performing trade studies, block-diagramming, and schematic capture
• Analyze and optimize circuit designs using spice and simulation
• Design PCB layouts for highly integrated assemblies with techniques including Flex/Rigid-Flex, High-Density-Interconnect (HDI), and heavy copper
• Work cross-functionally with mechanical engineers to miniaturize PCBs and optimize reliability for highly complex electromechanical systems
• Conduct failure analysis and debug complex systems using strong circuit analysis fundamentals
• Develop comprehensive design and test documentation and execute thorough Electrical Validation Test (EVT)
• Use command-line Linux tools to configure networks, run software on robots, and interact with firmware
• Use a wide variety of lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, DMM’s, power supplies, programmable loads, and spectrum analyzers to validate designs and debug hard problems.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in Electrical Engineering
• 5+ years of experience designing electronics
• Experience designing power electronics
• Experience using or designing motors and motor drives
• Experience implementing ethernet, PCIe, or other high speed data technologies
• Experience with High-Density-Interconnect (HDI) and heavy copper layout
• Strong knowledge of PCB fabrication and assembly
• Experience with Python, C/C++, or MATLAB and strong Linux command-line knowledge
• Working knowledge of Solidworks or similar mechanical CAD tools

The salary range for this position will be clearly stated in the job posting as required by Massachusetts law. The base pay range for this position is between $117,000 - $145,000. Base pay will depend on multiple individualized factors including, but not limited to internal equity, job related knowledge, skills and experience. This range represents a good faith estimate of compensation at the time of posting.
