Job summary

Overstory seeks a Staff Data Scientist, Wildfire, to lead the scientific foundation of its Fuel Detection Model. You will translate satellite and environmental data into wildfire risk insights, guiding decisions that reduce outages and protect communities.

You will design validation, quantify uncertainty, and collaborate with ML engineers to deploy production-ready models, while aligning with fire science standards and external collaboration.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of applied research or data science in wildfire science or related field.
• Deep expertise in remote sensing and geospatial analysis with satellite data.
• Strong ML skills in Python with GeoPandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch or XGBoost.
• Experience designing validation studies and communicating results to diverse audiences.
• Excellent written and verbal communication across technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Lead research to estimate vegetation structure, fuel conditions, and wildfire risk from satellite and environmental data.
• Design validation methodologies, ground-truth strategies, and uncertainty Quantification.
• Prototype ML approaches and partner with ML engineers for production systems.
• Integrate fire science with data-driven methods and ensure reproducibility.
• Set scientific standards for experimentation and model interpretability.
• Communicate findings to engineers, product teams, customers, and wildfire community.
• Mentor ML engineers on scientific methodology and domain reasoning.
