Job summary

Coupang in Seattle is seeking a senior Data Platform Engineer to drive architecture, reliability, and automation of our data infrastructure. You will shape the roadmap for petabyte-scale processing and partner with Data Science, Engineering, and Product to enable reliable data usage.

You will mentor engineers, eliminate single points of failure, and align platform capabilities with business growth, while maintaining security and governance across the data lifecycle.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
• 8+ years of data engineer experience in technology companies.
• Proficiency in Python and SQL; distributed processing and storage systems experience.

Role Overview

The Data Platform team at Coupang is primary technical authority driving the architecture, resiliency, and automation of Coupang’s foundational data infrastructure. We design and execute end-to-end strategy for distributed data processing systems capable of handling petabyte-scale data ingestion, storage, and processing with sub-second/real-time latencies.

Our team manages many critical data domains, supports high-volume real-time and batch data operations. In this role, you will lead the technical roadmap to scale our platform, build self-service automation to eliminate operational friction, and establish rigorous data quality and SLA governance frameworks across the organisation. You will mentor engineers, break single points of failure across domains, and work closely with senior engineering leaders to align platform capabilities with business growth.

What You Will Do

• Ideate, build, and manage analytics and production data ETL/ELT systems for high-volume data ingestion from diverse sources
• Partner with Data Science, Engineering, and Product to enable reliable, accurate logging/implementation and usage of Search data
• Ensure data quality, observability, and reliability across the data lifecycle
• Optimize systems for performance, cost efficiency, and scalability
• Define and manage SLAs for data systems
• Ensure security and compliance of data per industry standards

Minimum Qualifications

• 8+ years of relevant industry experience as a data engineer in a technology company
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications

• 10+ years experience in data/engineering overall
• Proficiency in Python and SQL
• Experience with distributed processing technologies and frameworks and distributed storage systems (e.g. HDFS, S3)
• Experience with ETL schedulers (e.g. Airflow, Dagster, DBT)

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. At Coupang, your base pay is one part of your total compensation. The base pay for this position ranges from $164,000/year in our lowest geographic market to $282,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on several factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
