News Corp is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to lead the administration, reliability, and strategic evolution of the enterprise Snowflake platform for Realtor.com Data Operations. This onsite Austin role focuses on keeping production data pipelines dependable while strengthening monitoring, automation, security and compliance controls, and mentoring Snowflake administrators. You will help scale a platform used by 900+ unique users and supports petabyte-scale analytics.
What you'll own
- Delivery, quality, reliability, and strategic evolution of the Snowflake Data Warehouse infrastructure for petabyte-scale analytics
- Incident response and root cause analysis for production data pipeline failures, with ongoing improvements to operational runbooks and SLA tracking
- Platform request prioritization and triage across a large user base, balancing urgent operational needs with longer-term platform improvements
- Comprehensive internal documentation, including onboarding guides, runbooks, and architecture decision records
- Snowflake administration best practices, including security frameworks and compliance requirements (RBAC, masking, encryption, and access control)
- Advanced monitoring, alerting, and observability for Snowflake, plus building Streamlit apps to track warehouse health, performance, and costs
- Automation of routine administration tasks (user provisioning, warehouse scheduling, access reviews) to reduce manual effort and enable self-service
- Schema migration and configuration change management across dev, staging, and production with review and rollback procedures
- Optimization strategies and tools to reduce Snowflake infrastructure costs while maintaining or improving performance
- Partnering with Data Engineering and Analytics teams on warehouse schema and integration patterns that support business requirements
- Establishing and enforcing data governance policies, data quality standards, and compliance controls, ensuring CCPA requirements are met
- Mentoring engineers on Snowflake DBA activities, best practices, and emerging technologies, serving as a subject matter expert
- Collaboration with cross-functional teams including Product Managers, Data Engineers, and Analytics teams
- Evaluating new technologies and approaches to evolve and modernize platform capabilities
- Technical presentations and architecture reviews with internal stakeholders and leadership
- Working within a primarily Agile/Scrum product development process
What you'll bring
- 8+ years of experience in data platform engineering or database administration roles
- 4+ years hands-on experience administering and optimizing Snowflake in production
- Deep Snowflake architecture knowledge, including compute/storage separation, query optimization, clustering, materialized views, and time travel
- Strong SQL skills, including data structures, data integrity, schema design, and dimensional modeling best practices
- Proficiency in Python (or other scripting languages) for automation, tooling, and operational workflows
- Proven ability to manage and prioritize competing requests across a diverse user base
- Experience driving technical initiatives as a technical lead and subject matter expert in data warehouse administration
- Experience with cloud-based architectures (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and familiarity with development, testing, and deployment automation practices
- Experience using Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform
- Experience building and/or designing monitoring, alerting, and observability tools/platforms
- Strong understanding of data security, governance, and compliance (RBAC, data masking, encryption, audit logging)
- Ability to mentor and guide other engineers, with strong communication and presentation skills
- Motivation to build great solutions and codebases in a fast-paced environment
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
