Job description

The Assistant Director of Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) provides leadership in delivering comprehensive, high-quality, and trauma-informed mental health services to students while advancing campus-wide outreach, prevention, and wellness programming. This position offers direct therapeutic and diagnostic counseling to students experiencing social, emotional, and academic concerns and provides clinical education and support as part of a coordinated approach to student well-being.

The role is responsible for the coordination and delivery of psychoeducational programs for the university community and works collaboratively with campus partners to expand and enhance mental health outreach services that promote student well-being and success across the university community. The Assistant Director provides supervision, training, and on-going professional development toCAPSstaff, emphasizing ethical practice and current trends in college mental health and prevention. The position also supports student-led wellness initiatives and contributes to the development of leadership opportunities for student groups engaged in mental health education.

In addition, the Assistant Director conducts program evaluation and research through the collection and analysis of data to support continuous improvement of mental health services. The role represents CAPS and the university through community engagement, presentations, and service, and serves on appropriate university committees. Reporting to the Director ofCAPS, the Assistant Director assists with the overall administration of the center and may serve as acting director in their absence, including supervision of professional and administrative staff. This position includes regular evening hours to support student programming and performs other duties as assigned by the Director ofCAPSand/or the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.

This position is Mandatory Personnel: Employees whose presence has been determined to be mandatory to University operations during certain types of adverse weather or emergency events.

Minimum Training and Experience Requirements

To possess at least a Master’s Degree in Counseling, Psychology or a related field, preferably from a CACREPor an APAaccredited program. To have some experience in counseling, assessment within an educational setting, and college student services. To have credentials as a National Certified Counselor and as a NC Licensed Professional Counselor or NC Licensed Practicing Psychologist or equivalent credentials.

Management Preferences

Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field (CACREPor APA-accredited program preferred); experience providing counseling in a college or university setting, facilitating groups, developing outreach and prevention programs, providing clinical supervision, and serving on student support or emergency response committees preferred. Candidates should hold or be eligible for North Carolina licensure (LCMHC,LCSW, or equivalent) and National Certified Counselor (NCC) credentials. Full licensure preferred; provisional licensure with anticipated full licensure within one year will be considered.

Required Licenses and Certifications

National Certified Counselor and North Carolina Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor or North Carolina Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or North Carolina Licensed Practicing Psychologist or equivalent credentials. Provisional licensed individuals will be considered if they have the experience required for the position.
