Job Summary

The Controls Systems Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining an integrated multi-site controls and automation solution spanning Supermicro's global facilities for rack integration, burn-in, and cooling infrastructure. This role combines hands‑on technical execution (device connectivity, protocol configuration, database integration) with system‑level architecture and design, bridging Rack Solutions, Facilities, Production, and IT teams to create a unified, scalable, and data‑driven controls environment.

System Architecture & Integration
  • Design and implement a multi‑site controls architecture across Supermicro's global facilities.
  • Define network topology, redundancy, and high‑availability requirements for all control nodes and servers.
  • Develop and maintain standardized frameworks for BACnet, Modbus, SNMP, and OPC‑UA communication layers.
  • Ensure open, non‑proprietary architecture to support integration with enterprise BMS, SCADA, and analytics tools.
Device Connectivity & Configuration
  • Commission and configure sensors, meters, CDUs/CDMs, cooling‑tower controllers, and other I/O devices on Supermicro's secured network.
  • Collaborate with IT to obtain and manage IP allocations, VLAN assignments, and data‑security compliance for IoT and controls systems.
  • Implement diagnostic toolsets (e.g., YABE for BACnet, Modbus Poll) to verify real‑time connectivity and point accuracy.
Data Collection & Storage
  • Architect and deploy a centralized telemetry database capable of storing high‑resolution time‑series data from power, thermal, and environmental sensors.
  • Define data‑retention, redundancy, and backup policies to ensure system reliability and compliance with internal standards.
  • Integrate with production and facilities analytics pipelines to support capacity tracking, tower performance analysis, and burn‑in optimization.
Visualization & User Interface
  • Collaborate with internal software teams (e.g., Jarvis's group) to build intuitive dashboards and mobile/web front‑ends for multiple user groups (Rack, Production, Facilities).
  • Develop visualization layers using Ignition SCADA, Grafana, or comparable frameworks, ensuring modularity for site‑specific expansion.
Construction Project Integration
  • Participate in new construction and retrofit projects to ensure controls and BMS standards are embedded from design through commissioning.
  • Define and review controls and instrumentation specifications in architectural and MEP packages to ensure compatibility with global controls standards.
  • Work closely with Facilities Project Managers, Controls Contractors, and Engineering Consultants to confirm that new systems can be seamlessly integrated into Supermicro's global infrastructure.
  • Validate installed systems during commissioning for proper network configuration, protocol compatibility, and data visibility.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with Global Facilities to align with enterprise‑wide BMS modernization and control initiatives.
  • Coordinate with Production Engineering to leverage power‑tracking data for charge optimization and burn‑in capacity management.
  • Work with Architecture & Infrastructure teams to validate cooling‑tower and CDU/CDM performance through collected telemetry.
Standards & Documentation
  • Establish Supermicro's internal standards for controls system design, protocol implementation, and data naming conventions.
  • Produce technical documentation covering device configuration, IP mapping, and point-list templates.
  • Train internal staff on system operation, troubleshooting, and expansion best practices.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Controls, Computer Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience in industrial controls, building automation, or data‑center systems integration.
  • Deep familiarity with BACnet, Modbus TCP/IP, SNMP, and related protocols.
  • Experience designing or deploying BMS/SCADA systems (e.g., Ignition SCADA, Niagara, Tridium, Wonderware, etc.).
  • Strong background in database integration (SQL Server, InfluxDB, PostgreSQL, etc.) and data logging architecture.
  • Proficient in Python or scripting for automation/configuration within SCADA/BMS frameworks.
  • Working knowledge of network architecture (subnets, VLANs, firewall rules, IP management).
  • Excellent documentation, communication, and cross‑department coordination skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in data‑center or high‑density rack integration environments.
  • Familiarity with liquid‑cooling, CDU/CDM, and tower control systems.
  • Experience deploying multi‑site redundant controls servers.
  • Knowledge of industrial IoT security and edge computing best practices.
  • Familiarity with Grafana, Node‑RED, Ignition Perspective, or equivalent visualization tools.
  • Exposure to Supermicro rack products, burn‑in lines, and production automation.
Success Metrics
  • All global sites connected to a centralized controls network with ≥ 99.9% uptime.
  • Standardized telemetry and controls data available to Facilities, Rack, and Production within Q2 post‑hire.
  • Controls and BMS design standards embedded in all new construction and retrofit projects.
  • Implementation of cross‑department dashboards and alerting systems by phase 2 (6–9 months).
  • Measurable improvement in burn‑in line utilization, tower efficiency, and diagnostic turnaround time.
