Known as “Kansas City’s Essential Hospital,” UH is the safety net healthcare system for Jackson County/Kansas City. We are an academic medical center, serving as the primary teaching institution for the UMKC Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, and Pharmacy.

Job Description

The Staff Chaplain, or PRN Chaplain, provides age-appropriate spiritual, emotional, and sacramental ministry for patients, families, and the staff of Truman Medical Centers, Inc. Chaplains serve through interdisciplinary care, 24/7 in-house on the Hospital Hill campus. They maintain professional Chaplain Certification and actively participate in continuing education. Chaplains are encouraged to have a strong overall background and are encouraged to specialize in a particular area of care (Oncology, Cardiology, OB/GYN, etc.). Staff chaplains, serving cooperatively with other chaplains, provide appropriate religious/spiritual rites and services sensitive to the variety of spiritual/cultural/religious needs of patients, families, and staff. Chaplains work in a team context, with accountability to one another and the Director of Spiritual Health Services.

Minimum Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited seminary, university or college with a Master’s degree in a relevant area or equivalent. Usually, this is a Masters of Divinity degree. Other educational backgrounds will be considered for equivalency on a case-by-case basis.
  • Successful completion of Level II CPE, four units total from a nationally recognized and accredited training center for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE, NACC, and NAJC). This requirement may be adjusted for PRN staff based on skills and awareness acquired in other ways besides CPE.
  • Four years of pastoral experience for Staff Chaplain/one year of pastoral experience for PRN, which may include CPE.
  • Strong motivation to carry out the services of the department as well as the ability to identify with and be sensitive to the cultural values and patterns of patients served by Truman Medical Centers.
  • Ordination and/or ecclesiastical endorsement by a major faith group, e.g., as a Minister/Priest/Rabbi/Imam, and endorsement should be as a Chaplain.
  • Must be skilled in empathy, objective listening, inter-faith orientation, teamwork, self-direction, functioning in a high-stress environment, and providing spiritual care across cultural, racial, religious, and gender lines.
  • Current Board Certification as a Chaplain by a Professional National Association in Healthcare (APC, NACC, and NAJC) is expected of full-time staff chaplains. Timelines for certification are negotiated with the Director if a full-time staff chaplain is not presently certified. Certification of PRN chaplains is encouraged, but not required at the present time.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Specialization in a major medical facility and trauma center.
  • Specialization in a specific area of medical care (Behavioral Health, Oncology, Cardiology, OB/GYN, Palliative Care, etc.).
