Job Description Summary:

The Staff Chaplain provides pastoral counseling and spiritual support to patients, family members/significant others, and staff throughout the assigned healthcare setting. The chaplain actively serves as a member of an interfaith pastoral care staff, sharing in activities such as staff meetings, on-call responsibilities, and providing meaningful worship experiences.

Responsibilities And Duties:

  1. 60%: Provides direct patient care as requested for emergent and routine requests. Assesses spiritual needs/concerns of patients and their families using clinical pastoral conversation. Communicates and documents patient responses to determine the effectiveness and congruence with the plan of care. Provides support and care to healthcare staff.
  2. 10%: Participates in on-call rotation which may include overnight or weekend shifts.
  3. 10%: Participates in patient care conferences, interprofessional team meetings, department quality improvement initiatives, policy review, and research projects.
  4. 5%: Provides appropriate religious/spiritual rituals, non-pharmacological interventions to patients, families, and interprofessional team. Acts as a liaison with the patient's faith group/leaders, including other community or cultural resources.
  5. 5%: Demonstrates knowledge of medical ethics and legal issues including advance care planning, organ donation, futility of care, and patient rights. Acts as a primary contact for ethics concerns and formal consultations.
  6. 5%: Provides care in diverse acute/non-acute settings including but not limited to hospital, outpatient areas, extended care facilities, and homes.
  7. 5%: Participates in system clinical pastoral education program as a mentor, preceptor, and didactic instructor. Offers in-service education to the interprofessional team.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's Degree (Required) from an accredited college, university, or theological school by a member of the Council for Higher Accreditation. Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE, NACC, CASC). Certification or eligibility as recognized by relevant spiritual care organizations. Demonstrated skill set and professional ethics meeting the standards for professional chaplains.
