Job summary

GitLab Inc. is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer on the Core DevOps team to lead backend initiatives, modernize a large monolith, and establish API, security, and operability standards. You will collaborate with product, frontend, and security teams while shaping architectural direction and governance.

You will mentor engineers, drive AI-assisted workflows, and contribute to a remote-friendly culture with strong engineering practices and quality guarantees.

Qualifications

• Experience leading technical work across multiple teams.
• Deep backend architecture and production experience with complex applications, services, or platforms.
• Experience modernizing a monolith or legacy backend in production using modular approaches.
• Experience documenting technical decisions with clear proposals and decision records.

Responsibilities

• Lead the technical design and delivery of backend initiatives that span teams and remove systemic bottlenecks.
• Drive modular backend, service, data, and platform architecture, modernization of monoliths, and prevent fragmentation.
• Define and improve standards for APIs, contracts, security, testing, performance, observability, and maintainability.
• Establish patterns for dependency management, data ownership, and operational documentation.
• Set Go service patterns and Kubernetes practices, and guide Rust adoption where it improves security or performance.
• Participate in on-call and incident response, acting as escalation point and turning incidents into improvements.
• Partner with Product and Engineering leadership on platform roadmap decisions and trade-offs.
• Mentor senior and intermediate engineers and drive AI-assisted workflows with guardrails.
