Southern Arizona Legal Aid, Inc. (SALA) is seeking a full-time staff attorney to work with the Volunteer Lawyers Program (VLP) providing pro bono civil legal services in family, consumer, housing, wills, employment, and related areas.

Licensed attorneys, or those eligible for admission to the Arizona Bar, will join a team serving indigent clients across nine counties. Salary ranges and a comprehensive benefits package accompany this role.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • 1. Recruit volunteer attorneys and LPs to provide legal information, advice & brief services, and direct representation.
  • 2. Coordinate volunteers in SALA’s service areas; schedule clients and volunteers, set up video conferencing as needed.
  • 3. Develop or improve pro per legal packets and legal information online or in person.
  • 4. Provide support in legal research or drafting motions as needed for low-income clients.
  • 5. Onboard and train volunteers; organize CLEs to train and recruit volunteers.
  • 6. Assist with opening, maintaining, and closing client files; track volunteer hours.
  • 7. Assist with coordinating law student volunteers and internships; possible court appearances.
  • 8. Assist with annual VLP luncheon.
  • 9. Assist Director with grant reporting.
  • 10. Attend Equal Justice Conference if funded.
  • 11. Other duties as assigned by VLP leadership.

Southern Arizona Legal Aid, Inc. (SALA) provides free, civil legal services to low-income.

Arizonans across nine counties and 11 Native American communities within a footprint of approximately 33,000 square miles.

PRINCIPAL FUNCTION

Southern Arizona Legal Aid, Inc. (“SALA”) is accepting applications for a full‑time staff attorney. The attorney will work with the Volunteer Lawyers Program (“VLP”). VLP recruits from the private bar to provide pro bono legal services to indigent clients in the areas of family, consumer, housing, Title 14 minor guardianship, bankruptcy, government benefits, wills and employment law.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS

Member of the State Bar of Arizona, eligible for admission to the Arizona Bar, or pass the next exam; applicants licensed for 2 years in another jurisdiction may practice by special rule. Criminal background check required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4. Applicants must exhibit a high degree of sensitivity and awareness of the problems and issues related to the low-income community. They should have initiative, excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in a multi-cultural setting.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • 1. Recruit volunteer attorneys and legal paraprofessionals (LPs) to provide legal information, legal advice & brief services, and direct representation in civil legal matters.
  • 2. Coordinate volunteer attorneys and legal paraprofessionals (LPs) in SALA’s geographical and legal service areas. Work with staff in satellite offices to schedule clients and volunteers, set up video conferencing when necessary, and facilitate volunteer work generally.
  • 3. Oversee the development or improvement of pro per legal packets and development or improvement of legal information available to the community in‑person or on the internet.
  • 4. If needed, provide support to volunteer attorneys and legal paraprofessionals (LPs) in legal research, in the giving of advice or in drafting of legal motions or pleadings. This may include advising, and sometimes representing, low‑income individuals in any of SALA’s legal service areas.
  • 5. Onboard and train volunteer attorneys and legal paraprofessionals (LPs). Create, coordinate, and/or organize Continuing Legal Education (CLEs) classes to train and recruit volunteers.
  • 6. Along with other VLP staff, assist with opening, maintaining, and closing client files. Coordinate and manage direct representation cases; will be responsible for recruiting, placing, initiating, and checking on the status of directly referred pro bono cases quarterly, to include sending retainers and letters to volunteer attorneys and legal paraprofessionals (LPs) and clients, and tracking volunteer hours.
  • 7. Assist Director as needed in coordinating and supervising law student volunteer opportunities and the internship program. This may include recruitment, placement decisions, administrative duties, and supervision. May include court appearances.
  • 8. Along with staff, assist with annual VLP luncheon in the fall.
  • 9. Assist Director with grant reporting when needed.
  • 10. Subject to funding, attend annual Equal Justice Conference in May.
  • 11. Other duties as assigned by VLP Director, the Deputy Executive Director, or Executive Director.
JOB LOCATION AND SCHEDULE

Tucson, Arizona

Full‑time, exempt

COMPENSATION

Salary range $58,656 – $101,915 DOE; up to 5% additional compensation available to individuals fluent in a language other than English that is used by more than 10% of SALA’s eligible client population.
