Job summary

Maryland Legal Aid in Landover, MD, seeks a full-time general practice staff attorney to handle all functions from intake to representation across family law, consumer protection, workers’ rights and public benefits.

Attorneys maintain files, draft pleadings, develop case theory, and appear in hearings, with some flexibility in practice areas. Hybrid in-person/remote work is available, and MLA offers a generous benefits package. Salary ranges from $76,812 to $118,565.

Qualifications

• J.D. from an accredited law school.
• Admitted to practice in Maryland or eligible for Maryland admission; next bar exam possible.
• Knowledge of civil law, procedures, and rules of evidence.
• Proficient with Office 365 (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
• Self-starter with ability to juggle multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Ability to provide quality legal advocacy for low-income clients.
• Willingness to travel locally and regionally in Maryland; Westlaw Edge knowledge a plus.

Responsibilities

• Screen clients for eligibility and refer as appropriate; perform admin duties as needed.
• Conduct initial and follow-up client interviews.
• Perform factual investigations and legal research.
• Advise clients on results and options; maintain client records in Legal Server.
• Draft pleadings, memoranda, and briefs.
• Develop case theory and strategy for representation.
• Prepare cases and represent clients in negotiations, hearings, trials, and appeals.
• Engage with community groups and outreach activities; assist with training materials.
• Pursue ongoing professional development through MLA trainings.
